IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In some countries, it is often became a major issue of purchase a home is better than a rental home for citizens. Although it have some negative aspects but I remain convinced on its facilities in long term because of excessive monthly rent and mental peace.

First & foremost, most of the residence have to pay a lot amount for monthly accommodation cost. Because shelter is a fundamental right for everyone. For example, people who lives in urban cities have to pay more than 40% of their monthly income for house rent. It creates some problems such as, low saving rate and sometimes failure to pay rent ontime. From my perspective, it is convenient for individuals to keep a bank loan by monthly paying process. It can helps them to pay almost same in long term but after all they can use the opportunity to gain a properties ownership.

On the other hand, self house or apartment offers mental peace and it is easy access all types of facilities. The reason behind it is there are some restrictions by the owner of home which may create a extra pressure for renters. As follows, they can not able to use backyard of rental home as a garden although have maximum effort on it. The another one is, they can not utilize the parking or garage as their wish. It is a noticeable drawback for everyone. For that given facts, I think it is positive to buy a home rather than rent.

In conclusion, if we can make some sacrifices we should stay on rental homes otherwise, it is good to purchase one by taking loans.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the prompt: you explain why people may prefer ownership, citing rent costs and the restrictions renters can face, and you state that buying is positive. The example of urban residents spending a large share of income on rent helps make the financial reason concrete. However, some points are not fully explained: the claim that a bank loan lets people pay “almost same” over the long term needs clarification, and the link between home ownership and “mental peace” could be developed with a clearer explanation. The conclusion also introduces the idea of making sacrifices to remain renters, which does not sit clearly with your stated preference for buying. Develop each reason and keep the position consistent.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. The paragraphs generally group related ideas: rent costs are discussed first, followed by the freedoms associated with owning a home. Linking expressions such as “First & foremost,” “On the other hand” and “In conclusion” help signal the stages of the argument. At times, however, connections are mechanical or unclear. “Because shelter is a fundamental right” is left as a fragment, and “As follows” does not introduce the examples naturally. The conclusion’s contrast between making sacrifices to rent and buying with loans also weakens the progression of your position. Use more precise links and make the relationship between each example and its main point explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of housing-related vocabulary, including “monthly accommodation cost,” “bank loan,” “ownership,” “restrictions” and “parking or garage.” These choices allow you to discuss both financial and practical reasons for preferring ownership. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “purchase a home is better than a rental home,” “excessive monthly rent,” “keep a bank loan” and “gain a properties ownership.” Some spelling and written-form issues, including “ontime” and “can not,” also reduce precision. Aim for natural combinations such as “buying a home rather than renting,” “take out a mortgage” and “build equity.” This would make your meaning clearer and your vocabulary more controlled.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including a concessive opening (“Although…”) and explanations introduced with “because” and “which.” This shows some range, and the main ideas are usually understandable. However, errors in verb forms, agreement, articles and sentence construction occur across the response. For example, “it is often became” combines incompatible verb forms, “most of the residence have” has an agreement problem, and “people who lives” does not match its plural subject. “Although it have some negative aspects but…” is also structurally faulty, while “they can not able to use” uses an incorrect verb pattern. Practise building accurate clauses first, then combine them; check subject–verb agreement and use either “although” or “but,” not both in the same construction.
