IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 4.5)

Nowadays, in some countries owing a house rather than renting one is very important for people. Most of the people buy house even if it they have it but they use it as a source of income. I will discuss it and I think this is a positive situation.

Firstly, owning a home for many people is not an issue maintain it bear expenses of the home is very important. This is the reason why people renting their houses. For example one person buy a house and the home has two floors. The person had a small family so they rent out the other floor. It will gives him a benifit they maintain their house time by time and they earn money from it and they dont have stress in their mind to renovate it by time to his own money. The rented person gives him a rent so they use it to renovate it.

Secondly, a person was so much rich so they use one house and buy another to build his assets. When he build his assets they use it as a source of income they renting the house a earn a monthly money on them.

On the other hand, if someone have money they spend it on bought house they utilize in the business and their business were grown and they bought new car or something why they boound their money. For instance if some business owner buy house and suddenly they faces any problem in business he need cash. I dont think house sell quickly as compare to car. If they buy car and sale it on market at anytime they had a cash in his pockets.

In conclusion, propertie is very good for being rich and use it in future for living.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You give a clear opinion that owning property is positive, and you offer relevant reasons, including renting out part of a home and using a second property to generate income. However, the response only partly answers the question: it does not clearly explain why home ownership is especially important to people in some countries, and the discussion shifts to business assets, cars, and access to cash. Several points are difficult to follow or insufficiently explained, such as how renting a floor helps the owner maintain the house. Develop the reasons directly and explain their significance, for example security, investment, or cultural expectations. The conclusion is brief and does not clearly restate the main reasoning. The response meets the stated length requirement; nine words copied from the task prompt were excluded from the count.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has a basic paragraph structure, with an introduction, two main sections, a contrasting point, and a conclusion. Sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “On the other hand” show an attempt to guide the reader. However, progression is difficult to follow because the relationship between ideas is often unclear, and the contrast introduced by “On the other hand” does not connect smoothly to the earlier reasons. References such as “they,” “it,” and “them” sometimes have unclear meanings, making it hard to identify who owns or rents the property. Some sentences also combine several points without clear links. Organise each paragraph around one reason, then explain and illustrate it in a logical order, using linking phrases only where the relationship is clear.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “rent,” “source of income,” “assets,” “renovate,” and “business,” so the reader can recognise the general subject. However, the range is limited and several word choices or combinations are inaccurate, which sometimes makes the intended meaning unclear. Examples include “owning a home … is not an issue maintain it,” “they use it as a source of income they renting the house,” and “a monthly money.” Spelling errors such as “benifit,” “boound,” and “propertie” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise property-related expressions and check word forms and spelling. For instance, distinguish “buy a house” from “own a house,” and use natural combinations such as “earn rental income” and “build wealth.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, and you use some subordinate clauses, as in “if someone have money” and “if some business owner buy house and suddenly they faces any problem in business.” However, these attempts are often inaccurate, and errors frequently make the relationships between ideas difficult to understand. Verb forms and agreement are recurring problems: “It will gives him,” “they renting,” and “they faces” need corrected forms. Articles and sentence construction are also unreliable, as in “buy house” and “owning a home … is not an issue maintain it.” Several sentences run ideas together without clear punctuation, including the sentence beginning “The rented person gives him a rent.” Practise accurate simple sentences first, then build longer sentences with controlled clauses, checking agreement, tense, articles, and punctuation.
