IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In few countries the idea of buying a home rather than taking one for rent is most important for people. Because some people like a home buy it so that they can save their money and not to give rents for the rest of their life. I have both positive and negative perspective about it.

The positive side of buying a house for some people is that they want to buy a house so that they will be free from the tension about when to pay the rent for the house. In villages the idea of buying a house is really common and is still happening because some believe that if they buy it in present date it can support their family in future and they don't have to worry about paying the rents, while some believe that buying it in present date on an amount and selling it in future will help them a good amount of profit. And that is the reason that property business in village is more common as compared to city.

On the other hand the negative perspective that most people should not go for buying a house could be that if they would carefully invest the money in a business rather than buying a house with it and if there is luck and struggle in their business, they will be able to buy more houses of their own in the future. Because investing money in any business and earning from that very business can help you pay the rent and also grow your business with time and thus after sometime you can have a house of own and the money will be with you and may be more than it was while deciding to buy a house or start a business with it.

In conclusion, in some countries people tend to buy a home while ignoring to pay rent for one is considered as very important because they want to spend their money on something that they don't have to worry for extra thinking for paying rents.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both parts of the question: you suggest that people buy homes to avoid rent and provide security for their families, and you discuss possible advantages and disadvantages. However, the reasons are only partly developed. The point about future family support is relevant, but the claim that buying and reselling property brings profit is not explained with a clear example. Your negative view—that investing in a business could eventually enable someone to buy several homes—is also speculative and needs more support. The position is not fully clear: “I have both positive and negative perspective” presents a balanced view, but the conclusion mainly restates why people buy homes without saying whether you consider this trend positive or negative. State your judgement clearly and support it.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for positive and negative points, and a conclusion. This helps readers identify the main sections. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow, particularly in the long sentence beginning “In villages the idea of buying a house…” and the extended business-investment argument. These sentences combine several claims without clearly showing how one leads to the next. Linking phrases such as “On the other hand” are useful, but “Because” begins a fragment in the introduction, and repeated references to buying a house and paying rent make the development feel repetitive. Use shorter sentences, make each paragraph’s main point explicit, and ensure the conclusion directly answers the positive-or-negative question.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the general ideas, including “buying a house,” “pay the rent,” “invest,” and “profit.” However, the range is limited and several phrases are repetitive or imprecise, which makes some points less clear. For example, “taking one for rent” is an awkward way to describe renting a home, while “help them a good amount of profit” does not express the idea naturally. “Extra thinking for paying rents” is also unclear. Aim for more precise collocations and avoid repeating “buy a house” and “rent” where alternatives such as “home ownership,” “rental payments,” and “property” fit. These improvements would make your meaning more fluent and exact.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including conditional structures such as “if they would carefully invest the money…” and clauses explaining future outcomes. However, complex sentences are often difficult to control, and errors recur. “Because some people like a home buy it” is not a complete, well-formed sentence, and “I have both positive and negative perspective” has an article and number error. In the business paragraph, the conditional construction shifts awkwardly between “if they would” and “they will be able,” while the long sentence makes the relationships between clauses hard to follow. There are also problems with articles and possessives, as in “a house of own.” Build accuracy by using shorter sentences and checking clause structure, verb forms, and singular/plural agreement.
