IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that in different countries people prefer to have their own home instead of having temporary one . While this view has some merit, i believe that it is a positive situation.

One important reason why i see this view is positive is that the individuals who have their own homes are being more financially stable compared to others . For example, if you have a permanent place to live in, you don't need to pay much more money for this section monthly,Furthermore you can invest the money of renting in any field and gain wealth at the long term, which cleary demonstrated this point.

However, it is also true that people who used to rent homes have more flexability in their lives, those people believe that the switching from one place to another make them get more relationships and experiences . For instance, if you prefer to rent home rather than being in constant one , you will have the chance to build up new relationships and recognising to new caltures. Although this argument is valid to some extent, I still believe that owning a home is better than renting one, as we need to be in a high level of stability to focus on enhancing the other aspects of our families and provide a rigid future to our children .

In conclusion, while there are argument on both sides, I think that having your own home is the best way to be stabilized. Overall, this view is more reasonable when considering it's long-term impact on individuals.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your response addresses both parts of the question: you give a reason for home ownership—greater financial stability—and clearly state that you see it as positive. You also acknowledge a counterargument, explaining that renting can offer flexibility and opportunities to meet people and experience other cultures. These ideas are relevant, but the explanation of why ownership matters in some countries could be more specific, and the financial point is not fully clear: owning a home does not necessarily mean avoiding monthly housing costs. The discussion of renting is more developed than the central explanation of the trend. To strengthen the response, explain the social or economic reasons behind the preference and support each main point with a more precise example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting contrasting views, and a conclusion that restates your position. Linking expressions such as “However,” “Although,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the argument, and the contrast between renting and owning is easy to identify. This meets the lower-band expectations securely and shows some flexibility in organising opposing ideas. At times, however, connections within sentences are awkward or mechanical, particularly in the first body paragraph, where “Furthermore” runs directly into the preceding sentence. Some references, such as “this view” and “this point,” are also vague. Use clearer sentence boundaries and make each paragraph’s main claim explicit before adding support.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “financially stable,” “permanent place to live,” “relationships,” and “long-term impact.” There are also attempts at less common expressions, such as “rigid future,” but this is not a natural collocation in this context. Several noticeable spelling and word-choice errors—“flexability,” “cleary,” “caltures,” and “stabilized”—reduce precision, while phrases such as “renting in any field” and “in a high level of stability” are unclear or unnatural. The range is sufficient to communicate your main ideas, but accuracy and natural collocation are inconsistent. Build a bank of topic-specific phrases and check spelling and word forms carefully; prefer precise expressions such as “financial security” and “a stable future.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including conditional examples (“if you have a permanent place to live in”) and concession clauses (“Although this argument is valid to some extent”). Most of the argument remains understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems are evident. For example, “the switching from one place to another make” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “people who used to rent homes have” shifts awkwardly between past and present. Articles are missing in “rather than having temporary one” and “rent home,” while sentence boundaries are unclear around “monthly,Furthermore.” Capitalise “I” consistently and check agreement, articles, and punctuation when editing. More accurate control of these patterns would make your complex sentences easier to follow.
