IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In some countries owing a home instead of leasing is more vital for people. Although building your owing house could be very espensive but it is important for people because it will save them the annual stress to pay a house rent. In contrast, i think this is a poitive situation because it will reduce the high cost of house renting.

Furthermore, building your own home instead of renting will save you from embrassement because you don't have to be fighting or quarelling with your neigbours every now and then. For example, i normally used to fight with my neighbours because of water or electricity bills when i was staying in a public building in Abuja. Another reason while owning your own building is vital for people is because it carries respect, people around you will be respecting you, for instance, here in Nigeria, any man without his own house will not be giving the respect he deserve while with his kingsmen.

This is a positive effect because it will reduce the scarcity of house in some nations. In Nigeria today, we are eperiencing shortage of houses but when people start buiding their own house, it will help to reduce the scarcity of houses. Moreover, it brings development to countries, for instance, Asokoro Abuja is known for it's unique buildings.

In conclusion, owning a private home instead of reading is important for people because it will helps to crash the high cost of renting, on the other hand, this will reduced the scarcity of buildings and save stress for the house hunting.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the question: you suggest that home ownership can reduce the burden of rent and bring social respect, and you clearly state that you see it as positive. The examples about disputes over bills in Abuja and housing development help make the response relevant. However, some reasoning is not fully clear or developed. For instance, the claim that owning a home will “reduce the scarcity of houses” needs explanation, since it is not clear how individual ownership would increase the overall supply. The point about respect among “kingsmen” is also asserted rather than explored. Develop each reason with a clearer explanation of how it affects people, and ensure the conclusion accurately restates your main arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has an overall structure, with an introduction, supporting paragraphs and a conclusion, and signposts such as “Furthermore,” “Another reason,” and “In conclusion” help show the direction of the discussion. However, progression within and between paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow. The first paragraph combines the cost of renting with your opinion, while later paragraphs move quickly from neighbour disputes to social respect and then housing shortages. Some links are mechanical or unclear, such as “In contrast,” which does not introduce a clear contrast, and “on the other hand” in the conclusion. Group related reasons into focused paragraphs and use linking phrases only when their logical relationship is accurate. Clearer references to the ideas being discussed would also improve flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “owning a home,” “house rent,” “scarcity,” and “development.” However, the range is limited and several spelling and word-choice errors make parts of the response harder to understand. Examples include “owing” for “owning,” “espensive,” “embrassement,” and “quarelling.” Some expressions are also unnatural, such as “save them the annual stress” and “carries respect.” Aim to learn accurate topic collocations and check spelling carefully. More precise wording would help you express the reasons clearly—for example, distinguish the financial security of ownership from the social status it may bring.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses beginning with “Although” and “because,” and most of your main points can be understood. However, control of sentence structure and verb forms is inconsistent. For example, “Although building your own house could be very expensive but it is important” incorrectly combines “although” and “but”; use one structure. In “it will helps,” the verb form should be “will help,” and “this will reduced” should be “this will reduce.” There are also problems with agreement and articles, as in “the respect he deserve.” Practise checking each sentence for a clear subject and verb, correct tense after modal verbs, and accurate punctuation.
