IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 4.5)

Owning a home has become very popular in recent years. In certain countries, buying a house rather than renting is crucial for the public. This happens in several cases. In this essay, I will discuss both positive and negative situations according to this statement, and then I will present my own opinion.

Firstly, I would like to describe a positive situation about owning a house. Most individuals, including many other people, think about buying a home; they would live alone in the house and not have any problems to face in the future. Owning a home is a beneficial way to survive and feel happy. Particularly, most individuals are not provided with any facilities to buy a home in other societies. They could live in a simple home. In my opinion, when individuals buy a home in another town or society. It is more comfortable life to live in a town or society.

On the other hand, I would like to discuss renting a home. This process has some notable drawbacks. Like, many people are very poor and do not have enough money to afford it. Thats why, they live in flats and apartments

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

You introduce the topic and attempt to discuss both home ownership and renting, but the response only partially answers the question. The main reason people consider ownership important is not clearly explained: statements such as “it is a beneficial way to survive and feel happy” are broad and do not show why ownership matters in particular countries. Your view on whether this is a positive or negative situation is also not stated clearly, despite the introduction promising an opinion. The renting paragraph mentions that some people cannot afford a home, but this does not fully evaluate the situation or explain its wider effects. The response is also below the required 250 words, which limits the development of your ideas. Add specific reasons and examples, and state and support a clear overall position.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

There is a basic attempt to organise the response, with an introduction followed by paragraphs beginning “Firstly” and “On the other hand.” These markers help the reader recognise a change of focus. However, the ideas do not progress clearly within the paragraphs: the discussion moves from living alone to future problems, then to facilities and other towns without explaining the connections. The phrase “In this essay, I will discuss both positive and negative situations” also does not accurately preview the task, which asks why ownership is important and whether this is positive or negative. The final paragraph ends abruptly, with no conclusion. Develop one main point at a time, use clear links between explanation and example, and finish by restating your position.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the general topic, and phrases such as “owning a home,” “renting,” “afford it,” and “notable drawbacks” are relevant. However, the range is limited and several expressions are vague or repetitive, including “individuals,” “home,” “town or society,” and “positive situation.” Some word combinations are unnatural, such as “a beneficial way to survive” and “more comfortable life to live.” These choices make parts of the argument difficult to interpret precisely, although the overall subject remains understandable. Aim for more specific language about housing security, financial costs, and personal independence, and check that words combine naturally. Avoid repeating general terms when a precise alternative can express your point more clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You use mostly simple sentence patterns and make some attempts to join ideas, for example, “Most individuals … think about buying a home; they would live alone…” and “Thats why, they live in flats and apartments.” Meaning is generally recoverable, but errors and awkward sentence construction occur often enough to affect clarity. The sentence beginning “In my opinion, when individuals buy a home in another town or society” is incomplete because the opening clause is not followed by a complete main clause. “It is more comfortable life to live” also has an incorrect article and sentence structure. There is some control of basic present-tense forms, but a wider range of accurately formed sentences is needed. Practise complete clauses, articles, and punctuation, then proofread each sentence for a clear subject and verb.
