IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Owning a home has more benefits rather than renting a home because own houses has own rules, and less costing of emi and maintating. So, in some countries people believe that owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. I think this is a positive situation as renting a house may cause burden.
Therefore, having a own house may cost more in starting as we have to give full down payment but later we have to only maintain but when we rent a house we have to give emi every months which cost more as we are giving money in part of the total portion whereas which later cost more then the house cost. Along with paying emi we also have to pay many bills like electricity, water. Also emi may increases time to time as depend on the popularity of the place where home is. Also renting a house is a short-term assest as depending on situations.
Moreover, owning a house lead us to maintain home as we will like decorate or renovate by own choice but while on rent house we can't change the infrastruce or interior of own choice , we have to take permission from owner. We are also restricted with the rules and regulations.
In conclusion, many people own their house instead of renting because it provide stability, finicial security and a valuable long-term assest.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address both parts of the question: you suggest that ownership offers financial security and control over the home, and you state that you see it as positive. However, the reasons are only partly developed, and some financial comparisons are unclear—for example, the claim that renters pay “emi every months” and that this eventually costs more than the house. The response also ends by summarising why people buy homes rather than clearly reinforcing whether this is positive or negative. The required minimum was not met: the response contains 222 words, 28 short of 250; the 12 words copied from the prompt are excluded. Develop each reason with a clear explanation or example, and make the positive judgement explicit in the conclusion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion, and signposts such as “Therefore,” “Moreover” and “In conclusion” help show the intended structure. However, progression within the first body paragraph is difficult to follow: the discussion moves from a down payment to “emi,” bills, changing costs and the short-term nature of renting without clearly connecting these points. Some linking expressions are also used mechanically, and the conclusion repeats the reasons rather than drawing the argument together. Organise each paragraph around one main reason, explain it in a logical sequence, and use clear references so readers can follow comparisons between owning and renting.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “down payment,” “electricity,” “renovate,” and “rules and regulations,” so the reader can identify the subject of the essay. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations make ideas unclear, such as “less costing of emi,” “short-term assest,” and “maintating.” Spelling and word-form errors are also noticeable, including “finicial” and “infrastruce.” Aim to use accurate, natural phrases for housing and costs, and check spelling carefully. Repeating “house” and “owning” less often by using suitable alternatives would also make the vocabulary more varied.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including a contrast between owning and renting and a clause beginning “as we have to give full down payment.” However, complex sentences are often faulty, and errors in agreement, articles, verb forms and sentence construction sometimes make the meaning difficult to follow. For example, “own houses has own rules” has an agreement problem, while “owning a house lead us” and “it provide stability” use incorrect verb forms. Articles are also missing in phrases such as “a own house.” Practise building accurate sentences with one clear main clause and a correctly formed subordinate clause, then check subject–verb agreement and articles.
