IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 4.5)

In this word there are many countries about 190 and in some of the them most of the people think that to owning a home is good thing reather then to the other side renting a home is important for them i think that owning a home is one of the best decision for people but most of the people think that for take a home on rent because in a rental home they just have to pay rent and many thinks they have not to do in a rental home .If a person take a home on a rent he will just have to [ay renjt of it .and on the other side if a person have their own home then he have to make it stabile he have to take too much things for his home such as to develo a bed room and all rooms to decorate but if we look at the rental home there are every kind of things are availabe there and people should have to pay just rent of the homw and bills succh as electric bills and others .

That is way most of the people think renting a home is one of very important for people they do not face any difficulties in such a case

I think that is a positive situation for people to renting a home but thereare aslo some bad situations have to face in renting a home is finicinal situtaion is one of the bad think in a renting home other wise it will be a good decision for people to have a home on rent

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You give a view that renting is generally positive, while acknowledging a financial disadvantage, so the response does address the opinion part of the question. However, the explanation of why home ownership is important is not clearly answered: the essay mainly describes the costs and responsibilities of owning a home and the convenience of renting. The opening also shifts between saying ownership is a good decision and arguing for renting, which makes your position difficult to follow. Ideas such as having fewer responsibilities as a tenant are relevant, but they need clearer explanation and support. To strengthen the response, directly explain why people value ownership—for example, security, stability, or investment—and then develop a consistent judgement about whether this preference is positive or negative.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

There is a basic attempt to organise the response: you introduce the topic, compare renting with owning, and give a concluding opinion. Some links, such as “on the other side” and “That is way,” show an effort to connect ideas. However, the progression is difficult to follow because several different points are crowded into one long paragraph, and the conclusion repeats the preference for renting without resolving the earlier claim that owning is a good decision. Connections between sentences are often unclear, and repeated references to “rental home” do not always make the relationship between ideas precise. Use separate paragraphs for the reasons people value ownership, your comparison, and your opinion, with clear topic sentences and more accurate linking.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “rent,” “electric bills,” “decorate,” and “financial situation,” which helps communicate the general subject. However, the range is basic and repetitive, with “home,” “rent,” and “people” appearing frequently. Several word choices and spellings make meaning harder to understand, such as “stabile,” “finicinal situtaion,” and “availabe.” Some phrases are also unnatural, including “take a home on a rent” and “one of very important.” Aim to use more precise housing vocabulary and learn common collocations, such as “own a property,” “pay rent,” “housing costs,” and “financial security.” Proofreading spelling and word forms would also make your ideas clearer.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

You attempt to connect ideas in longer sentences using “if,” “but,” and “then,” showing some effort to go beyond simple statements. However, these sentences are often difficult to control, and errors frequently affect clarity. For example, “if a person have their own home then he have to make it” has problems with subject–verb agreement and pronoun consistency, while “people think that to owning a home is good thing” uses an incorrect verb pattern and is missing an article. Sentence boundaries and punctuation are also unreliable, particularly in the long opening section. Practise accurate simple sentence patterns first, then build longer sentences with one clear main clause and correctly formed subordinate clauses.
