IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In recent time, owning a house has become a sense of pride for people, especially in countries that have a culturally rich background. People see home owners as someone who has their life all figured out and is successful in life. Owning a home has its own advantages and drawbacks.
Owning a house gives a person a sense of security and stability. It is financially a one time investment decision as land revenue keeps on increasing overtime. It relieves a person from monthly rents and revenue system. A home owner can design and renovate their house as they please and however they want to without the hassle and stress of a landlord. They can own pets and maintain their home to their desire.
Owning a home makes it easy for a person to settle down with family in a good neighbourhood and to maintain good rewlations with neighbours. It makes it easy for the owners offsprings as they do not have to change schools or mak new friends everytime they move.
Owning a home might put a setback in the moving and job aspect of a persons life as they cannot grasp an opportunity of moving to a different city or country for a better job offer easily without any worry.
Overall owning a house has its own positive impacts in a persons life and also some minor setbacks. But it is a good investment and financial decision as one have total control over their property and their land. And also if they ever decide to sell it they will get more return on investment.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses both parts of the question: it gives reasons home ownership matters, including security, freedom to renovate, and stability for families, and it identifies a drawback in reduced flexibility when pursuing work elsewhere. The overall view is that ownership is positive, especially in the conclusion, although the opening says there are “advantages and drawbacks” without yet making the position explicit. The reasons are relevant, but some are asserted rather than fully explained; for example, the claim that owning a home is a “one time investment” and that land value rises would benefit from qualification or a clearer explanation. The discussion of moving for work is also brief. A more consistently stated position and fuller development of these points would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, paragraphs presenting benefits, a paragraph on a drawback, and a concluding judgement. This makes the main line of thought easy to follow. The ideas within the benefits section progress from personal security and control to family stability, though the paragraph breaks could be used more deliberately to separate these related but distinct points. Connections between claims are sometimes abrupt, and the conclusion repeats the investment argument rather than drawing together the main reasons and the mobility drawback. Referencing is generally understandable, but repeated use of “owning a home” and “a person” makes the flow somewhat mechanical. Use a wider range of linking expressions and clearer transitions to make the progression more flexible.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response uses relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “security and stability,” “renovate,” “neighbourhood,” and “opportunity,” so the meaning is generally clear. However, the range and precision are uneven, with repeated basic wording such as “easy” and “good,” and several unnatural or inaccurate combinations. “Land revenue” does not express the intended idea of rising property value, while “monthly rents and revenue system” is unclear. There are also spelling errors such as “rewlations” and “mak,” and “offsprings” is not the appropriate form in this context. More precise collocations and careful proofreading would make the argument sound more natural and reduce moments of reader uncertainty.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
There is a mix of simple sentences and some longer structures, and most ideas remain understandable. The writer attempts subordinate clauses, for example, “as they cannot grasp an opportunity … without any worry,” and uses modal forms such as “might put a setback.” Some grammatical errors persist, particularly with agreement, articles, and possessives. In “People see home owners as someone,” the plural subject does not match the singular complement; “a persons life” needs a possessive form, and “one have total control” has incorrect subject–verb agreement. The sentence about children and moving also contains a faulty construction. Review agreement and possessive forms, and vary sentence patterns while keeping longer sentences controlled.
