IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In many countries across the world, home ownership is valued by many individuals compared to renting. This is majorly due to the stability it offers as well as the eventual affordability. In my opinion, I believe its largely a positive development.
On the one hand, it is understandable why some argue that it cheap to rent a house. Paying monthly rent dues is seen to be cheap and many people find it easier since t can fit within their monthly budget. For instance, many workers earning low wages find it affordable to budget for just renting rather than buying a house.
On the other hand, I would argue that the benefis of buying a house are more significant.
One of the primary reason is that it offers stability. When one purchase or build a house, they get space to live without disturbance. Incase of job loss, a person will have roof over is head without worrying about monthly payments that would occur if they were renting a property. Furthermore, building own home is eventually cheaper compared to renting a house for eternity. Although the initial costs may be high, this act will pay in the long run unlike monthly payments incurred in renting of some high-end properties.
In conclusion, whereas renting a propery such a house may be viewed as less costly,l by some individuals, I agree that owning one not only offers security in case of any eventuality of job loss or bankruptcy but its also cheaper in the long run once the construction is complete and ready to occupy.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both parts of the question: you explain that ownership can provide stability and become cheaper over time, and you clearly state that you see it as positive. The discussion of security is relevant, especially the point that owners may avoid rent payments after losing a job. However, the explanation of why ownership is important in some countries remains fairly general, and the affordability argument is asserted rather than fully demonstrated. The opening also introduces renting as cheap, but this contrast is not developed into a clear explanation of why people prioritise ownership. To strengthen the response, explain the social or financial reasons behind this preference and extend each main point with a more specific example or consequence.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, contrasting body paragraphs and a conclusion. Phrases such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” make the main stages easy to follow. The central progression from renting’s short-term affordability to ownership’s longer-term security is also understandable. However, the first body paragraph focuses on why renting may be cheap, so its connection to the question about the importance of owning a home is not fully clear. Some links are mechanical, and the conclusion repeats points from the body rather than drawing them together. Make the relationship between each paragraph and the question explicit, and use referencing and transitions more naturally.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “stability,” “monthly budget,” “initial costs,” and “in the long run.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “high-end properties” and “eventuality of job loss,” although some expressions are inaccurate or unnatural. Spelling errors such as “benefis” and “propery,” along with phrases such as “rent dues” and “renting of some high-end properties,” reduce precision. Aim for more natural collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, use “rental payments” and “renting high-end properties.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional idea in “Incase of job loss” and a concession beginning “Although the initial costs may be high.” The overall meaning remains understandable, but some errors in verb forms, agreement, articles and sentence construction prevent consistently accurate control. Examples include “it cheap to rent,” “When one purchase or build,” and “they get space to live”; these need forms such as “it is cheap,” “one purchases or builds,” and “they have a place to live.” There are also punctuation and spacing problems, particularly around commas. Review subject–verb agreement and article use, then proofread each sentence for complete, correctly punctuated structures.
