IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In many countries, particularly in pakistan home ownership is very important rather than renting one.Its a big acheivement in life, while renting is temporay. Owning home has deep financial and cultural reasons and i absolutely agree with that its a possitive development.
There are two main reasons to give prefrence for buying own home the first reason is, its a security sing or property for children or the second main reason is status in society. In countries like india, china pakistan owning home give respect in society. Therefore, the rented house any time back to agent or the second reason is bills are seperate or some people are not financially stable to paying bills or rent together. On the other hand, some issues like water electricity security problem the agent is not responsible for this or if anything broken in the house we have to pay extra charges. Whereas, in some cases agents did not give back security. In contrast, buying house is a investment property prices usually increases over time thats why people this owning home is the best option.
In my opinion, this situation is more positive than negative. When people own a home, they feel more secure and connected to their community. They take better care of the house and the neighbourhood because it is their own property. It also provides financial stability in old age - they do not have to pay rent after retirement. However, there is a negative side as well. Because everyone wants to buy a house, property prices become extremely high, especially for young people. Many people take large loans from banks and spend 20-30 years just repaying the debt, which creates mental pressure. For example in 2016 in south asia some university students doing reasearch and the percentage of home owners is more as compare to rented onces.
In conclusion, people prefer owning over renting because of cultural values of security and the financial benefits of investment. Although this creates high house prices, I think the sense of stability and long-term financial security makes it a positive situation overall.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both parts of the question: you explain why ownership matters, citing security for children, social status and investment, and you clearly judge it to be positive overall while acknowledging high prices and debt. The conclusion reinforces this position. However, some supporting points are unclear or only briefly developed. For example, the discussion of agents, bills and repairs shifts between renting and ownership without clearly explaining how these details support the main reasons. The example about university students in South Asia is also difficult to interpret and does not clearly substantiate your point. Develop fewer reasons more fully, and make each example directly demonstrate the claim it follows.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has an overall structure, moving from an introduction to reasons, a discussion of positive and negative effects, and a conclusion. The final paragraph also returns clearly to your overall view. However, progression within the second paragraph is difficult to follow: several points about status, bills, agents, repairs and investment are joined together without clear relationships. Connectives such as “Therefore,” “On the other hand,” and “In contrast” are sometimes used where the logical link is unclear, and the long sequence of ideas makes referencing confusing. Give each paragraph a focused purpose, use shorter sentences to separate distinct points, and choose linking expressions that accurately show whether you are adding, contrasting or explaining an idea.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “financial stability,” “property prices,” “security,” “investment” and “mental pressure.” These terms help communicate your main ideas. However, spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural word combinations are noticeable, as in “acheivement,” “temporay,” “security sing,” and “owning home give respect.” Some expressions, such as “the rented house any time back to agent,” are difficult to understand, while “positive development” is more natural than the misspelled form used in the introduction. Check spelling carefully and learn common collocations for housing and finance. More precise phrasing would make your reasons clearer and allow your relevant vocabulary to have greater impact.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast with “Although this creates high house prices” and a conditional explanation beginning “When people own a home.” These structures help express different sides of the issue. However, some errors in sentence construction, articles, agreement and verb forms reduce clarity. For instance, “owning home give respect” lacks an article and has incorrect agreement, while “some people are not financially stable to paying bills” uses an incorrect verb pattern. Several ideas are joined into run-on sentences, particularly in the second paragraph, and punctuation around sentence boundaries is inconsistent. Practise building complete sentences with one main idea, then check articles, subject–verb agreement and verb patterns during revision.
