IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 4.5)

There are two typesof houses in the world i.e.rent or own home.situation varies from country to country. People of Developing countries usually have both pravelent trends.but in developed countries the situation is different.i think its the matter of affordability of people ,neither ositivenor negetive scenario .Lots of factors are responsible for that.

As the finencial situation of developing countries are poor.for example in case of Pakistan ,many people live in their own homes while a large percentage of people live in rented houses especially in cities,Because city life is very expensive .People have many expenses such as electricity, gass, internet, telephone bills.Health, transport and food expenses are also high there .Usually people from country side migrated towards large cities in search of jobs and work to improve their lifestyle .Although the economy of my country is depend on loans taken by government .poverty, inflation and joblesness is increasing day by day .so people prioritize to live in rented house.

In Developed countries ,the situation is quite different.GDP rate, taxes are less.people have lots of opportunities to earn livelihood.government give free education, health and laisure facilities to its people. In this result, people has less expenses and can easily manage their own house.for instance ,in USA,Japan .Government has proper planning of development ,policies and Laws for its public .Balance is se

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You attempt to explain why home ownership may matter and give a position, but the response only minimally addresses the question. The opening says the situation is “neither positive nor negative,” yet the task asks you to decide whether it is positive or negative, so your view is not clearly answered. Most of the discussion compares developing and developed countries and focuses on affordability, bills, and public services; it does not explain directly why owning a home is especially important to people. The examples about Pakistan and the USA/Japan are brief and some claims are not clearly connected to the question. The response is also 39 words below the required minimum, leaving too little space to develop the reasons and your evaluation. State a definite position and support it with relevant, explained reasons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is some basic organisation: an introductory paragraph is followed by discussion of developing countries and then developed countries. This gives the reader a broad sense of the comparison. However, the progression is difficult to follow because the central question is not used to organise the ideas, and the final paragraph ends abruptly at “Balance is se”. Connections between points are often unclear; for example, the move from government services to people managing their own homes needs explanation. Linking words such as “for example,” “although,” and “so” are attempted, but some relationships are not logical or are punctuated in ways that interrupt the flow. Use complete paragraphs with clear topic sentences, and connect each example explicitly to your argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “affordability,” “expenses,” “inflation,” “opportunities,” and “development,” which helps communicate the general subject. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “prioritize to live in rented house.” However, the range is limited and several spelling and word-choice errors make parts harder to understand, including “pravelent,” “finencial,” “joblesness,” and “laisure.” Some combinations are unnatural, such as “earn livelihood” and “GDP rate, taxes are less.” Choose accurate, natural collocations and check spelling carefully. For instance, “earn a living” is more idiomatic, while “the cost of living is lower” expresses the intended comparison more clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentences, including a reason-and-result structure in “Usually people from country side migrated towards large cities … to improve their lifestyle.” However, control is inconsistent, and frequent errors sometimes make relationships between ideas unclear. Examples include “the economy … are poor” and “government give,” where subject–verb agreement is incorrect, as well as “people has less expenses.” Articles and sentence boundaries are also problematic: “in rented house” needs an article or plural form, and several sentences begin after full stops with lower-case letters or run together. The unfinished final sentence further affects accuracy. Practise building complete sentences with correct agreement, articles, and punctuation, then proofread each sentence for a clear subject and verb.
