IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In few nations individuals consider it very crucial having a home of their own rather than renting one. A home is a safe space for everyone, people should feel free to make changes of their own. I personally believe that owning a home is far more important and useful than renting one.
Although some people prefer a rented house rather than buying one, I am of the thought than rented homes cause more problems than owned homes. Individuals living in a rented house have to worry about the rent and few landlords even demand to pay the various bills as well. This may get financially unstable renters in a difficulty to make both ends meet. Consider an example of a common 9-5 worker, he is providing for his family, paying rent and paying bills as well. It is not financially manageble for him, he may initiate something illegal to keep bread on the table. Morever, a renter may feel depressed due to the insecurity to the home, landlord is independent of changing renters which of course is not the case if some sort of agreement is signed. But in many countries specifically in south asian countries there is no sort of writter agreement over the time period for which a renter can live securely and peacfully.
As of the benifits of owning a home, there are a couple which can be taken into consideration. First of all, owner of the home does not have to worry about paying the rent every week unlike the renter but of course he has to pay the bills, It is way better financially than renting a home. Take an owner of a house as an example, he is more likely to save money over a year than a one who rents a house. Secondly, owning a home gives people a sense of security, peacfulness and more importantly a freedom; freedom of doing anything they like.
In my opinion, although there may be negatives in owning a home for some people but for me there are more positivies for it. Radical evidences shows that owning a house is far more beneficial than renting one. It gives a sense of freedom to a person owning a home.
In conclusion, Both sides have their own advantages and disadvantages but owning a home dominates renting home in benifits.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address both parts of the question: you suggest that home ownership offers security and freedom, and you explain why renting may create financial pressure. Your position—that owning is preferable—is clear in the introduction and conclusion. However, the reasons for why ownership is especially important in some countries are only partly explained; the reference to South Asian rental agreements is relevant but needs clearer development and support. Some claims, such as renters potentially turning to illegal activity and owners saving more, are asserted rather than convincingly explained. The discussion of disadvantages of ownership is also brief. To strengthen the response, develop a few relevant reasons with specific, balanced explanation and make the link to the question’s focus on particular countries more explicit.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs on renting and ownership, and a conclusion. Ideas generally progress from the problems of renting to the benefits of owning, and signposts such as “First of all” and “Secondly” help readers follow the points. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear: “As of the benefits” does not smoothly introduce the next paragraph, and the final paragraph repeats the preference already stated without adding much. Referencing can also be imprecise, as in “he” for a hypothetical worker and “one” in the comparison with a renter. Use clearer links between claims and examples, and ensure each paragraph develops one central point rather than repeating the same conclusion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “financially unstable,” “insecurity,” “sense of security,” and “freedom,” which helps communicate the main ideas. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “taken into consideration.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “in a difficulty,” “insecurity to the home,” and “radical evidences.” Spelling errors such as “manageble,” “Morever,” “peacfully,” and “benifits” are noticeable and reduce the overall control of vocabulary. Aim for precise, natural combinations and check spelling carefully. Replacing vague or awkward expressions with established phrases would make the argument clearer and more convincing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a conditional structure in “if some sort of agreement is signed” and a contrast clause beginning “although.” The main message is generally understandable, but grammatical control is uneven. For example, “I am of the thought than” has an incorrect clause construction, while “a renter may feel depressed due to the insecurity to the home, landlord is independent of changing renters” joins ideas without a clear grammatical link. There are also errors in articles, agreement, and sentence boundaries, such as “owner of the home” and the comma splice in “A home is a safe space for everyone, people should feel free.” Work on complete sentence structures, accurate clause linking, and consistent article use while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
