IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In certain countries residents consider owning home more crucial than renting. in this essay will discuss possible reason for this preference of purchasing over living on rent. Furthermore, why I consider it positive approach.

owning of home instead of rental might be due to certain reason like mental relief from monthly payments stress and long run financial gains.

owner of home is relived from stress of every month rental obligation which sometime can be stressful due to certain other commitments and financial constraints, such as any unforeseen expenses, which can negatively influence the monthly expenditure balance. Then pressure mounts at end of due date which some time leads to unfavorable decisions and having long lasting influence on financial situation. For instance, one person who have allocated amounts for all commitments and liabilities, suddenly his car breaks down and need major maintenance, which is crucial for his daily commute and this maintenance cost disturbs his financial situation, therefore individual goes for credit card as he have pending rents. Which enhances his level of stress due to interest amount.

furthermore, in recent times due to growing demands of housing the value of house grows with time, similarly rental amount increases annually. Increase in value of owned property is positive influence while increase of rent is more pressure, furthermore along the road a good amount of profit can be attained and in meanwhile can be source of passive income through renting to someone as whole or a part of it which can support in other liabilities. Due to this people prefer ownership instead of rental.

Although rental also have certain positive, like no liability of property taxes and maintenance expenses.

I see the situation of preference to ownership over rental positively due to its short-term advantages in form of freedom and satisfaction. along with long term benefits due to enhanced valuation,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both parts of the question: you explain why people may prefer ownership, citing relief from rent obligations and the possibility of property appreciation or rental income, and you clearly state that you view the preference positively. These relevant points, especially the example of unexpected car repairs affecting a renter’s finances, show a sound response to the task. The discussion also acknowledges a benefit of renting. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others: the financial example is detailed, while the claimed “freedom and satisfaction” in the conclusion is not explained, and the positive-versus-negative judgement could be linked more explicitly to the reasons given. Developing that evaluation and clarifying the distinction between avoiding rent and still having ownership costs would make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has an overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on financial stress, a paragraph on property value and rental income, and a concluding position. The example generally follows logically from the point about unexpected expenses. However, progression is sometimes difficult to follow because several ideas are packed into long sentences, particularly the car-repair example and the discussion beginning “furthermore, in recent times.” Linking phrases such as “furthermore” are repeated, and the final paragraph is very brief and does not fully draw together the argument. Use clearer paragraph-level topic sentences, divide complex explanations into shorter units, and make references such as “this situation” or “this” more precise. These changes would make the cohesion less mechanical and the line of argument easier to track.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “financial constraints,” “unforeseen expenses,” “property,” “passive income,” and “liabilities.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and some less common expressions are attempted. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “rental obligation,” “the value of house grows,” and “enhanced valuation.” There are also spelling and word-form slips, including “relived” for “relieved” and “rental” where “renting” is needed. These do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision and naturalness. Focus on standard collocations for housing and finance, and check spelling and word forms during revision. More precise phrasing would help you express the same ideas with greater fluency.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “which” and “although,” and you communicate the main argument despite some grammatical errors. However, errors occur in articles, agreement, verb forms, and sentence construction. Examples include “owning home” instead of “owning a home,” “one person who have allocated,” and “rental also have.” The opening “in this essay will discuss” lacks a subject, while the car-repair example shifts between “one person,” “his,” and “individual,” making the sentence structure harder to control. Capitalisation and punctuation are also inconsistent, especially at sentence beginnings. Practise building accurate complex sentences, checking subject–verb agreement and articles, and splitting long sentences where several clauses compete for control.
