IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In some countries, people prioritise owning a home rather than renting one. The main reason for this could be a long term secuitiry shich comes with owning a home and I think, this is a positive scenario.

There will be many reasons for people to own a home. Firstly, owning a home can be a secured life time plan where they do not have to worry about their shelter. For them, it is a permanent sulution of chenging homes. Additionally, it is great for feseable investment where at the beginning the owner needs to pay a handsome ammount to buy a house and the rest goes for refurbishment. After that it beomes very cheaper for people to bear their living expenses as they do not have to pay rent. Moreover, having a home can be helpful beacuse they can do everything by their own choices interms of decoration, planation, or other needs, as there will not be any restrictions from landlords. For example, in Dhaka, there are several restrictions of renting apartment where tenent can not go outside of their home after 11 to 11.30 pm, followed by they are not allowed to use rooftops, restrictions in using elevator after certain time and many more.

I belive this is a positive situation beacuse owning a home can lead people to long term secuirity. When people are savings money and prioritising buying home rather than living in a rental place it helps them to achieve a strong asset through land. Owning a land and having a house on it can be a life time treasure where it helps a families many generation to have a sustainable and wtress free lifestyle. However, nowadays, it has become very expensive to buy a home therefore, if anyone have enough money they can proceed with the plan others can live with rental place. There should not be any pressure to having a homw without budghet.

To sum up, nowadays, owning a home for people is very important beause rental place is not sustaibale for future secuirity as well as it has many problems. I think, this is a good practise beasue it has more benifits than drawbacks.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both parts of the question: you explain why people may prefer ownership, including long-term security, avoiding rent and greater freedom over the home, and you clearly judge this preference to be positive. The Dhaka example gives useful support for the point about restrictions on tenants. Your response also recognises that buying is expensive and that renting may suit people without sufficient funds. To strengthen the response further, develop some points more fully: for instance, explain how home ownership creates security over time, rather than relying mainly on broad claims such as it being a “life time treasure.” The reasons are relevant, but their explanation and support are uneven, so the argument is not yet consistently extended.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction to reasons, your opinion and a conclusion. Paragraphing generally helps the reader follow the main stages, and signposts such as “Firstly,” “Additionally,” “Moreover” and “To sum up” make the relationships between points visible. However, the second body paragraph combines several ideas—security, savings, family benefits and affordability—without clearly separating or developing them. Some links are also mechanical, and the conclusion repeats the opening claim rather than drawing together the main reasons. Use clearer topic sentences and make each paragraph focus on one central idea; vary linking methods and ensure references such as “it” and “they” have an unmistakable meaning.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of vocabulary for the topic, including “permanent solution,” “refurbishment,” “restrictions,” “asset” and “sustainable lifestyle.” These choices show an attempt to express ideas beyond basic vocabulary. However, spelling errors and inaccurate word forms are noticeable throughout, for example “secuitiry,” “feseable,” “ammount” and “sustaibale.” Some combinations are also unnatural or unclear, such as “secured life time plan,” “bear their living expenses” and “strong asset through land.” These issues sometimes make the reader pause to interpret your meaning. Check spelling carefully and learn common collocations as complete phrases, especially when discussing financial security, housing costs and property ownership.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “where,” “as” and “therefore,” and most of the main ideas remain understandable. However, some sentence structures and grammatical patterns are inaccurate. For example, “they can do everything by their own choices” needs a more accurate construction, while “if anyone have enough money” has a subject–verb agreement error. There are also problems with articles, plurals and sentence boundaries, as in “it helps a families many generation.” Several long sentences join multiple points, making control less secure. Aim for a mix of shorter, accurate sentences and carefully checked complex ones; review agreement, articles and punctuation when editing.
