IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
People consider owning a house rather than renting one is crucial in some countries. people will not be worried regarding renting expenses if they own a house. I believe that having your own place to live in is rather than renting one is a positive development.
There are several reasons why peope prefer to own a house rather rent one. One essential reason is that people will not be stressed out to pay the rent every month. If individuals have a house, they will not have to spend a huge amount of money monthly as a result it decreases the amount of expenses. Another reason is that people who own a house can save money easily and spend it in beneficial things. For instance, many people nowdays who own a house have a good mental health. They will not be anxious or worry about payments that have to be done in last or beginning of the month.
I think having a house is a positive development than renting one for because people could sell it during difficulties. Many people face issues in their life such as sickness, travel and education. For example, in many countries people suffer from a chronic diseases as a rsult they can sell their houses and use that money to treat themselves. If all the people had owned a house, the rate of renting would have decreased.
In conclusion, people prefer to own a house because they would not be stressed out and it could be beneficial during difficult situation. I believe to own a house is a positive development than renting one.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both parts of the question: you give reasons for home ownership, including avoiding monthly rent and feeling less anxious about payments, and you clearly state that you see it as positive. These ideas are relevant and the examples about selling a home to pay for medical treatment help support your view. However, some points are not fully explained. For instance, the claim that owners can “save money easily” needs clarification, since buying and maintaining a home also involve substantial costs. The point about lower rental rates is introduced only at the end and is not clearly connected to your argument. Develop each reason with a more precise explanation and ensure examples directly support the main claim.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for reasons and your opinion, and a conclusion that restates your position. The progression is generally easy to follow, and phrases such as “Another reason,” “For instance,” and “In conclusion” help signal the stages of your argument. However, some links between ideas are mechanical or unclear. The sentence about selling a house during difficulties shifts quickly from the general claim to illness, travel and education, without explaining how these examples relate. The final sentence about rental rates also feels added rather than developed. Use clearer referencing and connect each example explicitly to the point it illustrates.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including phrases such as “renting expenses,” “beneficial,” “chronic diseases,” and “difficult situation.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or repetitive, which sometimes makes the meaning less natural. For example, “spend it in beneficial things” and “the rate of renting” do not express your intended ideas clearly; “spend it on useful things” and “the proportion of people renting” would be more idiomatic. There are also spelling errors such as “peope,” “nowdays,” and “rsult.” Aim to use more precise housing and financial vocabulary, and proofread carefully for spelling and natural word combinations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including conditional structures such as “If individuals have a house, they will not have to spend…” and a relative clause beginning “people who own a house.” The main message is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “I believe that having your own place to live in is rather than renting one” has an incomplete comparison, while “people prefer to own a house rather rent one” is missing “than.” There are also issues with articles, plurals and sentence boundaries, as in “a chronic diseases” and the run-on sentence beginning “as a result.” Work on complete comparisons, accurate clause connections, and checking agreement and punctuation.
