IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.0)
living in our own home is such a peace and blessing. Many people are preferring to own a home instead of living in rented home because of increaseing expenses. It is both positive and negative situation in my view and reason are highlighted .
Beginning with positive situations, people having their own home can do investment to buy assets . They can invest in land which will be benifical for their financial stability. However, Individual have the freedom to decorate their home , also they can renovate it whenever they wish to . Whatsmore, people have long term stability of owning a home , they have not to move place to place for good residence.
On the negative side , people with less financial stability cannot afford their own home because it required alot of maintenance which people are unable to reach the expenses. Moreover, Individuals are restricted to do decoration at rented places as landlord refuse them to decorate the rented place . Nevertheless, there is a lower term stability for people to live in a rented house because landlord can ask them to leave the house anytime.
In conclusion, positive situation to own a home are more investment opportunities, freedom for renovation or decoration, long term stability. The negative situation of rented home are less affordable, restricted to decorat and lower term stability.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You address both questions by giving reasons home ownership may matter—investment, freedom to decorate, and stability—and by identifying advantages and disadvantages. However, the response does not fully explain why owning a home is especially important in some countries; the opening mentions rising expenses, but this point is not developed. Your view that the situation is “both positive and negative” is stated, yet the conclusion mainly lists points rather than weighing them or making your overall judgement clear. Several ideas, such as maintenance costs and landlords’ restrictions, are brief or confusing. The response is also 25 words below the required minimum. Develop the country-specific reasons, explain each point with an example, and state clearly which side you consider stronger.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for positive and negative points, and a conclusion. This helps the reader follow the broad contrast, and signposts such as “On the negative side” make the shift clear. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes mechanical, with several points simply listed rather than linked through explanation. “Beginning with positive situations” and “Nevertheless” do not always create a clear relationship between the ideas that follow. The conclusion repeats earlier points without synthesising them. Improve cohesion by grouping related ideas, using pronouns or clear references to connect sentences, and adding explanation after each main point so the argument develops rather than reads as a list.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “financial stability,” “renovate,” “long term stability,” and “maintenance.” These choices show an attempt to discuss housing beyond very basic terms. However, the range is limited and several word-choice or collocation errors make the writing less natural, such as “such a peace and blessing,” “do investment,” and “lower term stability.” Spelling errors, including “increaseing,” “benifical,” and “alot,” also reduce accuracy. Aim to learn common housing collocations and check spelling carefully. More precise expressions such as “make an investment,” “housing security,” and “afford the costs” would help communicate your ideas clearly and naturally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, including the contrast introduced by “However” and the reason clause beginning “because.” Nevertheless, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences difficult to interpret. For example, “Many people are preferring to own a home” uses an awkward tense construction, while “Individual have the freedom” has a subject–verb agreement error. Articles and sentence boundaries are also inconsistent, as in “It is both positive and negative situation” and the comma splice in “However, Individual have the freedom to decorate their home, also they can renovate it.” Practise accurate sentence patterns, agreement, articles, and punctuation before adding more complex structures.
