IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

in some nations, having a home is important for people than renting one. I think this happens mainly becausing it is more comfortable and it also reduces pressure of having to pay rent every month end. I think this is a positive development because it allows people to enjoy their privacy.

One of the reasons i think having a home is important for people than renting one is that when you have your own house it brings more comfort and peace compare to a house you rent. In your house you won't have to worried about a landlord or a landlady. You can come back to your house anytime you want without being worried that someone is going to complain or insult you. In addition having a house also reduces pressure of having to pay rent every end of the month. When you own a home, you won't have to pay monthly rent because its your property.

For example, my family and i used to live in a rented apartment which we have to renew our rent monthly and this was really uncomfortable for my parents because they had to pay lot of money to renew our rent. As time goes on my father decided to build an apartment, this actually helped reduce the pressure of paying monthly rent.

I believe its a positive developement because it allows people to enjoy their privacy. Many landlords and landladys do monitor thier tenants every time. They want to know their movement, however, when an individuals have their own house they are likely to enjoy thier privacy because no one want to know what they are doing their house. For example When my family and i were living in a rented apartment the landlord always come to house to check what we are doing my dad always tell him to stop doing but the man insisted and he alway come again, however, now that we have moved to own house we are enjoying our privacy.

In conclusion,Having your own apartment is very important because you will be comfortable and it help reduces pressure cause by paying monthly rent. It is a positive development because no one would have to be monitoring you everytime.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the question: it explains why home ownership is valued, citing comfort and freedom from monthly rent, and clearly judges it to be positive because it offers privacy. The examples about your family’s rented apartment make the points relevant and help support your position. The main ideas are clear, but some development is uneven: the discussion of rent is repeated in the introduction, body, and conclusion, while the reasons behind the wider importance of owning a home in some countries are not explored beyond personal comfort and privacy. To strengthen the response, explain these reasons more fully—for example, security, cultural expectations, or investment—and develop each point with less repetition.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for reasons and your opinion, and a conclusion. The reader can follow the progression from comfort and rent costs to privacy, and examples are generally placed alongside the ideas they support. This gives the response a coherent foundation. However, connections between sentences sometimes feel mechanical, particularly through repeated use of “In addition,” “For example,” and “however.” Some references are also unclear, such as “this” in “this was really uncomfortable,” where the precise problem could be stated directly. Use a wider range of linking methods and make references explicit; also avoid repeating the same rent point in the conclusion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including relevant terms such as “landlord,” “monthly rent,” “property,” and “privacy.” These choices suit the topic, and the reader can generally understand your meaning. However, the range is limited by repeated basic words and phrases, especially “house,” “important,” and “pressure,” and some expressions are inaccurate or awkward, such as “renew our rent” and “monitor their tenants every time.” There are also noticeable spelling and word-form errors, including “developement,” “thier,” and “landladys.” Build a more precise range of housing-related vocabulary and check spelling and collocations so that your ideas sound more natural and exact.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response includes both simple sentences and attempts at longer structures, such as the sentence beginning “When you have your own house” and the contrast introduced by “however.” Most ideas remain understandable, but errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction occur across the essay. Examples include “you won't have to worried,” “when an individuals have,” and “the landlord always come.” Capitalisation and punctuation are also inconsistent, as in “In conclusion,Having” and “For example When.” These errors sometimes make the reader pause, although the overall meaning is usually recoverable. Review subject–verb agreement and verb patterns, and proofread sentence boundaries and punctuation while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
