IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Nowadays, owning a home instead of renting one is very important for people in some countries. There are several reasons for it, it can be financial stability or to have a permanent place to live. In my opinion, it is generally a positive situation, although it may have some disadvantages.
There are various reasons why people prefer to own their own homes. Firstly, having a house provides a sense of security and stability. People do not have to ask others to live in theirs houses or paying a rent. They can live peacefully in their own house with their families comfortably. Secondly, some individuals think that it is a good investment because properties price have been increasing day by day. For example, people who buy home in a very young age, they can sell the home in double price later in a future.
This situation is mostly positive because people do not have to worry about paying a rent every month. Moreover, owner of home have liberty to decorate or renovate their homes according to their taste. This can make them more comfortable to live their without having a stress. In some culture, owning a home is a sign of success.
However, buiying home can also have some disadvantages like they may have to take loan to pay large amount of money. As a result, they mave to experience financial stress. Renting can be a better option for people who need flexilibity because of their jobs or studies.
In conclusion, people prefer owning homes because it offers security, stability and potential financial benefits. Although buying home can be a financial pressure, I beleive that it is a positive sign.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the question: it gives reasons for home ownership, including security, stability and possible investment gains, and states that the situation is generally positive. The position is clear in the introduction and conclusion. The explanation of security is relevant, but the investment example—that a home bought young may later sell for double the price—is asserted rather than explained or qualified. The positive evaluation also relies mainly on avoiding rent and being able to decorate, while the disadvantages of debt and reduced flexibility are mentioned only briefly. Develop these points with clearer reasoning and examples, and explain how the benefits compare with the financial risks, to make the response more fully supported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on reasons, a paragraph supporting the positive view, a counterpoint, and a conclusion. Sequencing is easy to follow, and signposts such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” “Moreover,” and “However” help guide the reader. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some stronger control through purposeful paragraphing. However, connections can feel mechanical, and some references are unclear or awkward, as in “live in theirs houses” and “live their.” The sentence “There are several reasons for it, it can be financial stability…” also joins ideas without a suitable link. Use more varied transitions and ensure each pronoun clearly refers to its subject.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main ideas, with relevant terms such as “financial stability,” “sense of security,” “investment,” “renovate,” and “financial stress.” There are also attempts to express more specific concepts, including “potential financial benefits” and “flexibility.” However, noticeable word-choice, collocation, word-form and spelling problems limit precision: “properties price,” “in double price,” “a rent,” “bu ying,” “mave,” “flexilibity,” and “beleive.” Some phrases, such as “a positive sign,” do not express the intended judgement as precisely as “a positive situation.” Build accuracy by learning common housing collocations and checking spelling and word forms during revision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple sentences and some more developed structures, including a reason clause (“because of their jobs or studies”) and a concession in the introduction (“although it may have some disadvantages”). Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur in agreement, verb forms, articles and sentence construction. For example, “People do not have to ask others to live in theirs houses or paying a rent” has faulty pronoun and verb forms, while “owner of home have liberty” lacks appropriate articles and agreement. The opening “There are several reasons for it, it can be…” is also a comma splice. Practise accurate noun phrases and parallel verb forms, and separate or correctly join independent clauses.
