IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Today we are living in the world of advancement where with each passing day we are on track of reach the pinnacle of technology, however on this journey, we are neglecting major and important issues that will create a major mess if not solved on this. In past couple of years, there has been an ongoing trend where instead of owning a home, people generally tend to rent it. I strongly oppose this situation as owning a home in today world is extremely important.
There are multiple reasons why I believe owning a home is more important for people as compared to renting them. One of the major reason is return on investment. It means amount you spend in owning a house become your investment and once you intended to sell the property, you will get return on holding your asset. For example: Person A purchased a home in Mumbai in 1970 at cost of 15 thousand Indian rupees, today same house will have a net value of around 30 to 40 million.
Apart from return on investment reason, one of the major and I believe why owning a home is important then renting is confidence and mental peace. Main reason for this is in renting, you spend good amount of time in one house but due to various reasons owner can ask you to vacant the house so now you have to relocate unexpectdly, however if you own the place you are the boss and no one can question you.
Owning a home specially in today's age is extremely difficult. People have dream to own a house but sadly in today economy it have become extremely difficult.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You give a clear view that home ownership is important and provide two relevant reasons: financial return and greater security. The Mumbai example makes the investment point more concrete. However, the response only partly answers the prompt: it does not clearly explain why owning a home is especially important in some countries, and the final paragraph introduces the difficulty of buying without explaining whether this makes the situation positive or negative. Your position is stated, but the discussion is limited and some ideas need fuller explanation. To strengthen the response, directly address the country-specific importance, develop both reasons with clearer supporting detail, and conclude by explicitly evaluating the situation as positive or negative.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a recognisable paragraph structure: an introduction, two paragraphs giving reasons, and a final paragraph about the difficulty of buying a home. The ideas within the two main paragraphs are generally related, and transitions such as “Apart from” help signal a shift. However, the overall progression is not fully clear: the opening focuses on technological advancement and renting, while the final paragraph raises affordability without connecting it to your evaluation. Some linking is mechanical, and references such as “this situation” are not always precise. Organise the essay around the two questions, use each paragraph to develop one clear point, and add a conclusion that brings your reasons and judgement together.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “return on investment,” “asset,” “relocate,” and “mental peace,” which helps communicate the main ideas. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “pinnacle of technology.” However, the range is limited in places, and several word choices or collocations sound unnatural, including “on track of reach,” “vacant the house,” and “in today economy.” Spelling errors such as “unexpectdly” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise, natural expressions connected to housing and security, and check spelling and word forms during revision. More varied vocabulary would help you explain the reasons and your evaluation with greater clarity.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and longer sentences, using structures such as “once you intended to sell the property” and a contrast with “however.” This shows an effort to express relationships between ideas. However, complex sentences are often faulty, and errors in agreement, articles, verb forms, and sentence construction occur frequently enough to make some passages difficult to follow. For example, “one of the major reason” needs plural agreement, while “it have become” has an incorrect subject–verb form. The opening sentence also combines several ideas without clear grammatical control. Practise building accurate sentences first, then add subordinate clauses and contrast structures; careful proofreading for agreement and verb forms will improve clarity.
