IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In some countries, many people prefer to buy their own house instead of live in rented homes. This is because owning a home provide feeling of security and feeling of independence. In my opinion, i strongly belive that it is a positive development becacuse it gives a lot of benefits.

There are many reasons why people buy their owm home. Firstly it provides a sense of security because people do not have tension to pay rent every month and leaving their homes when owener asked to do so. Secondely, it considered a good investment because people live their home for many years and also market value of the house increasing day by day. For Example, in Pakistan many people earn to just buy their own house because they provide safe and comfortable place for their childrens.

I think, this is a positive situation beacuse owning a house gives sense of financial stabaility and also provide pece of mind. People decorated their homes according to their own wish without asking permissions to other individuals. However buying a new home was expensive, but for this purpose people take a large amount of loans from bank.

In conclusion, people want their own homes for security, independence and financial stabilitiy. Although buying a new home is costely, I belive home ownershipe is a positive development because it provides long-term benefits to individuals and their families.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both parts of the question: you explain that home ownership can offer security and independence, and you clearly state that you see it as positive. The investment point and the example of families in Pakistan are relevant, but they are only briefly explained; for instance, you mention rising market value without showing how this benefits owners over time. The discussion of taking bank loans also needs a clearer link to why ownership remains positive despite its cost. The response is 19 words below the required minimum, so it has less space to develop these ideas. Add specific explanation or an example for each main reason, while keeping your position clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph explaining reasons, a paragraph giving your opinion, and a conclusion. Sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “Secondely,” “However,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the main points. However, some links are mechanical, and the relationship between ideas is not always fully clear. For example, the sentence about taking a large bank loan follows the claim that ownership brings peace of mind, but you do not explain how borrowing supports that point. The conclusion repeats the main reasons rather than drawing them together. Develop transitions that show cause and contrast, and use pronouns or repeated key terms carefully so each reference is clear.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “sense of security,” “good investment,” “financial stability,” and “peace of mind.” These phrases communicate the central ideas, but the range is limited and several word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors reduce precision. Examples include “do not have tension,” “market value ... increasing day by day,” and “home ownershipe.” Some expressions are understandable but not natural in this context, such as “people earn to just buy their own house.” Aim for more precise housing and finance vocabulary, and check spelling carefully. Using a wider range of accurate phrases would make the argument clearer and more fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast with “Although buying a new home is costely” and a reason clause beginning “because.” However, errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction occur often enough to affect accuracy. For example, “owning a home provide” needs subject–verb agreement, while “it considered a good investment” is missing an auxiliary verb. In “people live their home for many years,” the verb pattern is incorrect, and “market value ... increasing” lacks a finite verb. Practise checking each sentence for a clear subject and correctly formed verb, then review articles and plural forms. This will help you express your ideas more reliably.
