IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

SOME PEOPLE BELIEVE THAT OWNING A HOUSE IS MUCH BETTER THAN RENTING ONE. BUT OTHERS ARE NOT AFFORD TO THESE NECESSARY THAT`S WHY THEY RENT A FLAT TO LIVE THEIR. IN MY PERSPECTIVE WE DISCUSS BOTH POINTS AND THE SITUATION FOR GOOD OR BAD.

ON THE ONE HAND, OWNING OWN HOUSE CAN SAVE MANY OPPORTUNITIES YOU CAN EASILY LIVE WITHOUT RESTRICATION , DECORTING YOUR HOUSE WITH ITS OWN CHOICE. FIRSTLY, YOUR COMFORT ZONE IS MUCH BETTER. OWNING A HOUSE PROVIDES PEOPLE WITH FINANCIAL SECURITY AND A STRONG SENSE OF STABILITY, ALTHOUGH PURCHASING A PROPERTY CAN BE A SIGNIFICANT FINANCIAL BURDEN.

MOREOVER, YOUR SENSE OF STABILITY CAN ENHANCE FOR MANY WAYS OR A LONG TERM INVESTMENT CAN INCREASE YOUR VALUE IN FUTURE.

FURTHERMORE, RENTING A HOUSE FOR INDIVIDUALS CANNOT BE STRESS TO SAVE A HUGE AMOUNT. YOUR FLEXIBILITY CAME BETTER BECAUSE WHENEVER YOUR COMPANY CAN SHIFT IN ANOTHER CITY YOU CAN EASILY MOVE TO THIS PLACE. IN ADDITION, YOU CAN AKE RESPONSIBILITES TO REPAIR THE UNUSUAL THING ITS THE RESPONSIBILTY FOR LANDLORD TO REPAIR THE MAJOR ITEMS FOR EXAMPLE, CRACK DOORS, BROKEN WINDOWS , PAINTED WALLS. THEY ARE MANY DISADVANTAGES THAT YOU ARE NO OWNERSHIP OF THIS PROPERTY EVEN YOU PAY EVERY MONTH. AND LANDLORD INCREASE YOUR RENT IN FUTURE. THIS MAY HAVE SEVERAL ISSUES. THEIR LESS FREEDOM YOU DO NOT CHANGES THEIR HOUSE HOLD THINGS. OR LESS STABILITY THAT YOUR AGREEMENT DO NOT RENEW THEN YOU ARE MOVE AWAY FOR ANOTHER RENT HOUSE.

IN MY CONCLUSION, I BELIEVE THAT OWNING ARE OWN HOUSE IS SAVE OPTION FOR MANY PEOPLE AND ITS A POSITIVE EFFECT FOR FUTURE GENERATION THAT THEY CAN LIVE THEIR OWN PROPERTY.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both the reasons people may value home ownership and whether this is positive, and your conclusion clearly favours owning a home. Relevant points include financial security, stability, freedom to decorate, and the flexibility and repair responsibilities associated with renting. However, the position is not consistently clear in the introduction, where “we discuss both points and the situation for good or bad” does not state your view. The response also shifts between discussing ownership and renting without fully explaining how each point answers the question, and several ideas—such as future value and benefits for future generations—are asserted rather than supported. Develop fewer points with clearer explanations and examples, and state your position directly from the beginning.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is some organisation: the response opens with the topic, uses “On the one hand” and “Furthermore” to introduce points, and ends with a conclusion. The reader can identify a general contrast between owning and renting. However, progression is difficult to follow because the discussion moves from ownership benefits to renting advantages and disadvantages within one long paragraph, without clear paragraph breaks. Some linking phrases are repetitive or do not show the relationship between ideas clearly; for example, “Moreover” introduces another stability point, while “In addition” leads into a confusing explanation of repair responsibilities. Use separate paragraphs for the reasons ownership is valued, the comparison with renting, and your evaluation. Make each paragraph develop one main idea, with clear references and transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You attempt topic-related vocabulary, including “financial security,” “sense of stability,” “long term investment,” “flexibility,” and “ownership.” These choices show an effort to discuss the issue beyond very basic terms. However, the range is limited by repeated general words such as “house,” “better,” and “many,” while inaccurate word forms, spelling, and collocations sometimes make meaning difficult to understand. Examples include “without restrication,” “decorting,” “your flexibility came better,” and “save option.” Some phrases, such as “save many opportunities,” do not express a clear meaning. Build a more precise set of housing-related expressions and check spelling and natural word combinations; this will help your ideas come across more reliably.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences, including a concession with “although” and a conditional idea beginning “whenever your company can shift.” This shows some effort to vary sentence structure. However, complex attempts are often faulty, and errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction frequently make the message hard to follow. For example, “others are not afford” lacks a correct verb form, “owning are own house is save option” has several structural problems, and “then you are move away” uses an incorrect verb pattern. Punctuation and sentence boundaries also need attention, particularly where several ideas run together. Practise building accurate subject–verb sentences first, then add subordinate clauses and check each clause for a complete, correctly formed verb.
