IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In the world there are so many diffrent kinds of countries and every country have their own thoughts and opinions about owning a property rather than living in rental homes.Home is where the heart is.This is mainly because people associate homeownership with financial security and social stability. In my opinion, this is generally a positive situation, although it can have some disadvantages.

There are several reasons that people prefer to own homes. This mentality is actually vital for every individuals.Firstly,Ownership is one kind of security and you do not have to leave the house on their accommodation.People thinking about their future generation as well. They burn their mid night oil and buying home on their own for their family. They will be on the cloud nine after buying home rather than living in rental homes. They do not have to worry about increasing rents or they do not have to worry about more amenities.Whenever they feel happy or sad they can get back to the one place which give them courage and tranquility.Whenever we need financial back or facing finance crisis having a personal property give us the backing.

On the other hand, everything have their pros and cons so according this situation renting homes will be give people headache.Rent is paid regularly without creating ownership and mortgage payments can gradually help people to build wealth.Furthermore, in some cultures they beleive that owning house is symbol of success and independence. It gives people courage and tackle the situations.

I believe that home ownership give financial stability and emotional comfort but also byuing house can create financial pressure because they might struggles with other necessities.I think it is positive vogue as long as people make realistic decision based on their financial circumstance.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the prompt: you explain why people value owning a home and state that you see it as generally positive, while acknowledging financial pressure. The points about security, future generations, and cultural associations with success are relevant. However, some explanations are not fully clear or developed. For example, “you do not have to leave the house on their accommodation” does not clearly explain the security benefit, and the discussion of rent and mortgage payments introduces a useful comparison without showing how it supports your overall judgement. Develop each reason with a clear explanation or example, and make the positive-versus-negative assessment more consistent throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has an overall structure, moving from an introduction to reasons, a contrasting point, and a concluding opinion. Linking expressions such as “Firstly,” “On the other hand,” and “Furthermore” help signal relationships between ideas. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow: the first body paragraph moves quickly from security to family, emotions, and financial support without clearly connecting these points. The contrast paragraph also shifts from the drawbacks of renting to the benefits of mortgages and cultural status, which weakens its focus. Use clearer topic sentences and group related ideas together; make sure each linking phrase accurately reflects the relationship between the sentences it joins.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “financial security,” “social stability,” “mortgage payments,” and “financial pressure.” There are also attempts at more expressive language, such as “tranquility” and “financial crisis.” However, several choices are inaccurate or too informal for this essay, including “burn their mid night oil,” “on the cloud nine,” and “positive vogue.” Some phrases, such as “more amenities” and “financial back,” are unclear in context. Spelling errors such as “diffrent,” “beleive,” and “byuing” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise, natural collocations and check spelling; avoid idioms unless you are confident they fit the meaning and register.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrast in “although it can have some disadvantages” and the conditional idea in “as long as people make realistic decision.” Meaning is generally recoverable, but some grammatical errors occur across the response. Examples include subject–verb agreement in “every country have” and “everything have,” and problems with verb forms in “renting homes will be give people headache” and “home ownership give financial stability.” Articles and plural forms also need attention, as in “is symbol of success” and “every individuals.” Review agreement, verb patterns, and article use, then proofread sentence by sentence. More accurate control of these structures would make your ideas easier to follow.
