IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In some counties it is crucial for its citizens to own a home than renting the place because of financial and psychological stress caused by renting a place. Renting a place is like a getting a long time loan from a bank, which you have to pay way more than initial price, also psychological stress of not having a permanent residence is also huge factor.

In majority of the countries are willing to buy a house if possible reason is very clear renting a place means huge financial disadvantage to the renting household. By looking at this problem from a financial perspective it is only profitable to renting party because they will keep making profit despite inflation or economic difficulty, as long as they find someone who is willing to rent. Now, from a if we are to look from rentinf perspective it is a financial disaster, rent will always go up and by the time contract ends they will gain nothing. In my country for instance, people prefer to get a loan to buy a house by doing this, instead of paying rent they will pay back their loans, when they repay the debt now they have their own place.

Moreover, there is psychological disturbance caused by renting a place, in some contracts lender have rights to kick you out based on certain rules, also knowing you do not have your own place always cause some stress when they think about it.

In conclusion, considering financial disadvantage of renting a place and internall discomfort caused by not owning a house, i do beieve it is a positive development for people to want to own a place.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both parts of the question: you explain why home ownership is valued, citing the financial cost of rent and the insecurity of not having a permanent residence, and you clearly conclude that this is positive. The example of people in your country taking out loans to buy homes also supports your explanation. This meets the task well, and your position is clear. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained: for example, the claim that renting is “only profitable” for landlords overlooks possible benefits to tenants, such as flexibility, and the psychological point could be developed with a specific consequence. A more balanced explanation and fuller support for these ideas would make the response more complete and convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, separate discussion of financial and psychological reasons, and a conclusion. Paragraphing helps the reader follow the main topics, and signposts such as “Moreover” and “In conclusion” make the direction clear. However, progression within the second paragraph is less controlled. The shift from “a financial perspective” to “a rentinf perspective” is unclear, and the repeated contrast between rent and buying makes the argument feel circular. Some references, such as “they” in “they will gain nothing,” are not fully clear. Organise each paragraph around one main claim, then explain and illustrate it, and use linking phrases only where they clarify the relationship between ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “financial disadvantage,” “economic difficulty,” “permanent residence,” and “psychological disturbance.” These choices allow you to discuss both practical and emotional reasons for preferring ownership. However, the range is uneven, with repeated use of “place,” “rent,” and “house,” and several inaccurate or unnatural expressions reduce precision. For instance, “getting a long time loan” and “renting party” do not express the intended ideas naturally, while “internal discomfort” is an awkward description of the emotional effect. Spelling slips such as “counties,” “rentinf,” and “beieve” are also noticeable. Build a wider set of accurate housing-related collocations and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a conditional structure in “as long as they find someone who is willing to rent” and a relative clause in “which you have to pay.” However, complex sentences are often not controlled successfully, and errors sometimes make relationships between ideas difficult to follow. For example, “In majority of the countries are willing to buy a house” lacks a clear grammatical subject, while “rent will always go up” shifts awkwardly from the surrounding plural references. There are also problems with articles, agreement, and sentence boundaries, as in the opening sentence and the long sentence beginning “Renting a place is like…”. Practise building accurate clauses first, then combine them with clear punctuation.
