IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.5)
In recent times, many countries, buying a house is seen as one of the important goals in life, much better than renting. This happens because people want long-term financial safety and stability.
However, the main reason people want to own a house is financial security. When you rent, you pay money every month and never get it back also you need to pay a amount of security deposit which is very high in comparison to a house or flat rent. Moreover, houses usually become more expensive, so owning a house protects your money from rising prices and will also gives you a great value of you property after some time if you wish to sell or give it on rent. Also owning a house is a feeling of confidence, independent and success. In many villages or cultures there is a mindset of buying your own house will show how successfull you have become.
Whereas, there is also a negative side that wanting to buy a new house comes with big problems. The high demanded houses makes house pricing very expensive in big popular cities. Yound people cannot afford to buy anything, which widens the gap between the rich and poor people. In addition, paying off a huge loan for thirty years causes a lot of stress and it stops people from moving to other cities for better jobs.
In conclusion, people often prefer owning a house to gain wealth and social respect. While this brings great benefits for family stability and security, it also makes housing unaffordable for many individuals. Hence, it is a balanced situation.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses both parts of the question: it explains motives for home ownership, including financial security and social status, and considers disadvantages such as unaffordability and reduced mobility. The conclusion also gives a position, describing the situation as balanced. These relevant points meet the task well, but the evaluation is not fully resolved: the prompt asks whether this is positive or negative, while “a balanced situation” does not clearly state which overall judgement you hold. Some support is also brief; for example, the claim that property protects money from rising prices would benefit from a clearer explanation or qualification. Make your overall view explicit and develop the main reasons with more precise examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph explaining reasons for ownership, a paragraph on drawbacks, and a conclusion. The contrast between benefits and disadvantages is easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “In addition,” and “In conclusion” help signal the progression. However, some connections feel mechanical or unclear. “Whereas” begins a paragraph without completing a contrastive clause, and the opening sentence is awkwardly organised, making the relationship between the country context and the main claim less clear. The conclusion also introduces “family stability” without developing it earlier. Use transitions that fit the sentence structure and ensure each paragraph’s ideas connect directly to the central argument.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “financial security,” “security deposit,” “rising prices,” “social respect,” and “housing unaffordable.” These expressions make the main ideas clear, and there are attempts at more specific language. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise, such as “a great value of you property,” “high demanded houses,” and “a balanced situation.” Spelling slips such as “successfull” and “Yound” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural combinations and precise phrasing; for instance, describe “strong demand for housing” and say that a property “may increase in value.” Proofreading for spelling and word forms would make the vocabulary more controlled.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response includes both straightforward statements and attempts at more complex structures, such as “While this brings great benefits …, it also makes housing unaffordable.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur in sentence construction, agreement, articles, and verb forms. For example, “In recent times, many countries, buying a house…” lacks a clear grammatical connection, while “will also gives” uses an incorrect verb form and “a amount” has an article error. The sentence beginning “When you rent” also joins clauses without suitable punctuation or a conjunction. Practise building complete clauses and checking subject–verb agreement, articles, and verb forms; this will improve accuracy while preserving your range of sentence structures.
