IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Owning a home is much important for the people of some countries, while in others countries peasants prefer to rent it. Before giving my point of view that why i think that owning a house is a positive situation, we will discuss the views of both given kinds.
People, who prefer to rent a house are likely to be more practical in thier daily chores as they do not want to invest a big sum of money just to a buy a house, rather they plan to invest that monay into some kind of businesses from where they get some extra income which provide some mor comfort in thier lives. One of my friend has this same mind set instead of buying 50000$ house, he invested in stocks and earning good money from it.
on the other hand, people who think that owning a house is one of the most important thing, they need a sense of saftey and they find it in thier home, where they do not to need to pay rent for every month, they are not asked to leave. They make thier memories of whole life there, where thier kids born, where the parents die, so there is a lot of emotional scentiments attached to that house, which they call home. My father has same thinking pattren he invested more than 60000$ to buy a house rather than to invest in some business. He thinks that there should must a place about which, you can say its mine, and a house is the best among the rest. These are the same reasons for what I would prefer to own a house rather than to rent one.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both parts of the question: you explain why some people value ownership, especially security, freedom from rent and emotional attachment, and you state that you would prefer to own a home. The contrast with renters who invest their money elsewhere is relevant, and the examples involving your friend and father help illustrate the two perspectives. However, the reasons for ownership are developed more fully than the reasons for renting, and the discussion relies heavily on personal examples rather than explaining the broader social or financial factors. Your view that ownership is positive is clear near the end, but an explicit, direct statement in the introduction and a fuller explanation of why this situation is positive would make the response more complete and persuasive.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph about renting, a contrasting paragraph about ownership, and a concluding preference. Phrases such as “on the other hand” help signal the shift between viewpoints, and the examples generally follow the ideas they support. However, the opening sentence and the phrase “Before giving my point of view” make the introduction awkward, while the final paragraph combines several reasons and examples in a long sequence. Some links are mechanical or unclear, including “These are the same reasons for what I would prefer.” Use clearer topic sentences and divide the ownership discussion into connected steps: security, financial considerations, and emotional attachment. A concise conclusion should restate your position and answer the positive-or-negative question directly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “invest,” “sense of safety,” “extra income,” “emotional sentiments,” and “memories,” which allows you to communicate the main ideas. There are also attempts at less common expressions, but several choices or collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “much important,” “more comfort,” “emotional scentiments,” and “mind set” do not express the intended meaning naturally. Spelling errors such as “thier,” “monay,” and “saftey” are noticeable and reduce the accuracy of the vocabulary. Aim for precise, conventional combinations—for example, “financial security” and “emotional attachment”—and proofread spelling. This would make your adequate range more controlled and appropriate for an academic essay.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “where they do not need to pay rent” and a contrast introduced by “while.” The main ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur across the response. Examples include “in others countries” (plural agreement), “one of the most important thing” (plural form), and “he invested in stocks and earning good money” (inconsistent verb forms). The sentence beginning “People, who prefer to rent…” is also awkwardly constructed, and “there should must a place” contains an incorrect verb pattern. Work on agreement, articles, and consistent tense, and break up long sentences so that each clause is grammatically complete. More accurate control of these structures would strengthen the response.
