IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In some countries people believe that owning a home is better than renting one.there are several rerasons about this attittude and i think its a positive development.

There are many reasons why people prefer thier own home. Firstly, home provides a sense of stability and security. They do not have worry about the rents or the increasing charges yearly by the landlord. The home can be beneficial asset for a long term as the real estate prices goes up year by year. Morever, people can decorate and renovate their own houses as they desired to alter it.This thing build a privacy and free will where people can done whatever they want with thier legit premises

In my opinion having a home is good for individuals health.they can build a strong connection with their siblings and guardians as well as with thier neighbours.Homeowners dont have to pay heavy mortages and this can be wholesome for the homies and ultimately they can save money from this. This money can spend be on the prosper and education. However, most of the peers cannot afford to buy their own houses because of the high property taxes. This can lead them to get loan with high interest rates.thats why in such cases renting a home instead of purchasing can be a good thing for ghetto individuals.

In conclusion buying a home is beneficial as it provides security and financial benefits to the people.Although, its a expensive thing to buy a premisies but it can create a positive development in the world.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the question: you give reasons for home ownership, including security, avoiding rent increases, and the chance to benefit from rising property values, then state that you see it as positive. These are relevant points and your position is clear in the introduction and conclusion. However, some ideas are only briefly explained or are unclear. For example, the link between owning a home and “individuals health” is asserted rather than supported, and the point about mortgages saving money is difficult to follow. You also acknowledge that high property costs can make renting preferable, but do not fully explain how this qualifies your overall view. Develop each main reason with a clearer explanation or example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. The first body paragraph mainly explains why people value ownership, while the next gives your view and introduces affordability as a qualification. Basic signposting such as “Firstly,” “In my opinion,” and “In conclusion” helps readers follow the broad direction. However, progression within paragraphs is uneven: the discussion moves from health and family connections to mortgages, savings and property taxes without clearly showing how these points relate. Some references, such as “This money,” are not fully clear, and the contrast introduced by “However” could be integrated more smoothly. Organise each paragraph around a central point and use linking phrases to make relationships between ideas explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “stability and security,” “real estate prices,” “renovate,” and “high interest rates.” These choices show an attempt to discuss both personal and financial reasons for ownership. However, the range is limited by repeated general words such as “home,” “good,” and “thing,” while several inaccurate or informal choices make meaning less clear. For instance, “homies” and “ghetto individuals” are unsuitable in this context, and “wholesome” does not naturally describe the effect of avoiding mortgage payments. Spelling errors such as “rerasons,” “attittude,” and “premisies” are also noticeable. Aim for precise, formal expressions and check spelling and collocations carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “as the real estate prices goes up year by year” and a contrastive sentence beginning “Although.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but errors in sentence construction and basic grammar occur often enough to make some passages difficult to read. Examples include “They do not have worry” (missing “to”), “people can done” (incorrect verb form), and “This money can spend be on” (incorrect passive construction). There are also agreement and article problems, as in “the real estate prices goes” and “its a expensive thing.” Punctuation and spacing around sentence boundaries are inconsistent. Practise accurate verb patterns, agreement, articles and sentence punctuation before adding more complex structures.
