IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

There are few nations where individuals believe that owning a home is very significant for them rather than renting one. The view on this topic may have different reasons to understand their choice.

The idea of possesing a property carries a lot of assurance and stability to others especially to those who have their own family. It provide greater advantages to do whatever they wanted including the interior and exterior designs, the rules they set for themselves, play loud music without worrying to disturbing the room next door, and the freedom to raise pets and do gardening, things that are quite restricted when renting a place. Nevertheless, not everyone can afford owning a home because it is quite expensive with all the mortgages and other bills compounded so some of the people opt to renting a place. This is especially true to those who do not wish to settle in a place for a long time like students or workers.

It is to my belief that owning a place is a positive situation particularly for those who already decided to finally settle down in the neighborhood of their choice. It gives them more room of possibilities to do things they wanted and greater space for children to socialize and be part of a community.

In conclusion, owning a home is a positive situation that offers the feeling of finally being settled and being secure but not everyone have the same means to acquire it. Hence, deciding to own a home is mostly up to the lifestyle and financial capacity of the person.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both parts of the question: you explain why ownership appeals, citing security, control over the home, and the ability to raise pets or garden, then clearly state that you see it as positive. The examples make the main reasons relevant and understandable. However, some points are more fully explained than others: the benefits of personal freedom are illustrated, while the reasons ownership matters in some countries could be developed further, for example by explaining cultural expectations or the value placed on long-term security. Your view is clear, but the discussion of the positive effects on children and community is brief. More explanation of these points would make the response more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a coherent overall structure, moving from an introduction to reasons for ownership, your opinion, and a conclusion. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and linking expressions such as “Nevertheless,” “It is to my belief,” and “In conclusion” make the progression easy to follow. Some connections are less smooth or precise: the opening says the topic has “different reasons to understand their choice,” which does not clearly introduce the reasons that follow, and the shift from affordability to people who do not wish to settle is abrupt. The conclusion also repeats the main position rather than drawing together the key reasons. Clearer links between ideas and more precise referencing would strengthen the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “assurance and stability,” “mortgages,” “financial capacity,” and “settle down.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and the examples of home improvements and lifestyle show some flexibility. However, several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “greater advantages to do whatever they wanted,” “opt to renting,” and “the neighborhood of their choice.” There is also a spelling error in “possesing.” These issues do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim to use familiar collocations accurately, such as “greater freedom to make changes” and “choose to rent,” before attempting more elaborate phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “things that are quite restricted when renting a place” and a subordinate clause beginning “because it is quite expensive.” Most meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “It provide” needs subject–verb agreement (“It provides”), and “not everyone have” should be “not everyone has.” In “without worrying to disturbing,” the verb pattern is incorrect; use “without worrying about disturbing.” The long sentence listing benefits also becomes difficult to control, and “what they wanted” does not match the surrounding present-time discussion. More consistent verb forms and careful checking of agreement and verb patterns would improve accuracy.
