IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

While some people believes that owning a house rather than renting is more worthwhile but I opposed this view point due to multiple reasons.

The one of the key reason for supporting this view is that renting a home will allow people to invest that money in stocks, which might make their investment more effective. For instance, if they will buy stocks of tesla and hold that for 3 years they might get more than 200% return, but it is not possible to get even half of return from the investment of apartment. Hence, it would also contibute towards the improvement of economy through tax from the amount of profit, which government might spend on people and as a result, people would get more benefits from the better transport, health facilities like in Europe.

Another reason for supporting this view is that if residents would buy flat in high rise building they might loose their investment in future. For example, if they bought apartment of $20000 and in future if building will collapse due to earthquake or flood, then might lost their money. But, if they will rent any flat then the owner would pay the loss, which would save their money.

However, some people believe that house is an asset and thay can earn alot of profit in long term. Such as, if they will buy villa of $50k and hold it for 20 years they might be able to sell it at the price of $200k. They think that house is safe investment as compared to stocks due to fluctuation in it price.

The benefits of renting a home far outweigh the drawbacks. The option of renting would make it possible for people to become financially free in short time period by investing that money in stocks with highest returns. They might be able to protect their money if any natural disaster happens.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You take a clear position in favour of renting, and you give reasons that relate to the question, including the possibility of investing savings elsewhere and avoiding some risks associated with property ownership. However, the task is only partly addressed: the question asks why home ownership is important in some countries, but this is represented mainly by the brief counterargument that a house may rise in value and feel safer than stocks. Your own position is stated, yet the reasons are not consistently developed or convincingly supported; for example, the Tesla return and the claim that renting leads to financial freedom are presented as broad assertions. Explain the social or cultural reasons people value ownership, then assess both sides with more balanced, specific support.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a recognisable paragraph structure: it introduces a position, presents two arguments for renting, acknowledges an opposing view, and concludes. This gives the reader some organisation. However, progression between ideas is not always clear, and the opening sentence is confusing because it combines “some people believes” with “but I opposed this view point.” Linking phrases such as “Another reason,” “However,” and “Hence” help signal relationships, but some are used mechanically or do not make the logic clear. The conclusion repeats the investment argument rather than drawing together the discussion. Use a clearer introduction, ensure each paragraph develops one main point, and make references such as “this view” unambiguous.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “investment,” “stocks,” “natural disaster,” “asset,” and “fluctuation.” There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “high rise building” and “health facilities.” However, the range is limited and several word choices, collocations, and spelling errors make the writing less precise: “contibute,” “loose,” “alot,” and “view point” are noticeable, while “get more than 200% return” and “protect their money” are not expressed naturally in context. Repeated use of “money,” “buy,” and “investment” also limits flexibility. Check spelling carefully and learn common collocations for property, financial risk, and returns.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including conditional examples and clauses introduced by “if,” “which,” and “as a result.” These attempts show some range, but complex structures are often faulty, and errors occur frequently enough to make parts of the argument difficult to follow. Examples include “some people believes,” “if they will buy,” “then might lost their money,” and “if building will collapse”; these involve agreement, verb forms, and missing or incorrect sentence elements. Articles and sentence construction also need attention, as in “The one of the key reason.” Practise forming accurate conditional sentences and checking subject–verb agreement, tense consistency, and complete clauses before adding more complex structures.
