IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
There has been an increasing debate over the the past few years that in several countries, owning a home is more worthfull for some individuals instead of renting one. There might be the several reasons for this preference. But, in my opinion owning home has more advantages and give positive implications.
Owning a property give sense of achievement and self satisfaction. And this is not a new to human behaviour. If a person has his own home, it will be easy for him to keep his family in a safe household, where he or she will not have to worry about changing it or moving to other place. For instance, if a family is living in rented property, there could be several reasons that may force them to leave property, and in some cases landlords may use power to evacuate that place. To keep family safe from such circumstances, individuals preffer owing home and for most of people, it is in the priority list to buy place for home. Owning home also give benefits in savings, for instance, he or she will no longer have to worry about monthly rents that could be saved.
People may argue that there may be negative circumstances for person who own a home. for instance, people may get loan to buy a land but he fails to pay back in time and there might be some other taxes over private property that could be avoided with renting one. Likewise, owning land is becoming more and more challanging for individuals over the time that may lead to mental stress. For example, residents of Karachi prefer rented home over owned due to huge property rates scarcity of land.
I would argue that there are more positive outcomes then negative. Having own home can help to live peacefully without worrying about monthly rents and searching new place in case of relocation. Similarly, owning home can help financialy, for instance, monthly rent savings and person can sell that property when in need, on top of that, property price rise with time that can give more benefits. So, there are more positive implication then negative.
In conclusion, there are individuals who prefer owning a home over renting one. Owning property may lead some negative outcomes but positve implications are far more greater.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both parts of the question: you give reasons for preferring ownership, including family security and avoiding rent, and clearly judge the situation to be positive. The discussion of possible disadvantages, such as loan repayments and property taxes, also shows awareness of a counterargument. These relevant points support the response well at this level. However, some ideas are more fully explained than others: the financial benefit of ownership is repeated in the body and conclusion, while the reasons behind the preference could be developed further. The Karachi example is relevant but its link to the wider question is not fully explained. To strengthen the response, extend each main reason with a clearer explanation or specific consequence.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, paragraphs for benefits and drawbacks, a stated opinion, and a conclusion. The reader can follow the main progression from reasons for ownership to the counterargument and final judgement. Connectors such as “For instance,” “Likewise,” and “In conclusion” help signal relationships between ideas. At times, however, cohesion is mechanical or repetitive: “for instance” appears several times, and the final paragraph repeats points about rent savings and relocation rather than advancing the argument. Some references, such as “that place” and “this preference,” could be more precise. Use a wider range of linking methods and make each paragraph develop a distinct point.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use vocabulary relevant to housing and finance, including “landlords,” “property,” “monthly rents,” “loan,” and “property rates,” so the topic is generally clear. There are also attempts at more formal expressions, such as “positive implications” and “mental stress.” However, noticeable spelling, word-form, and collocation errors reduce precision, including “worthfull,” “preffer,” “challanging,” “financialy,” and “more positive implication.” Some phrases are unnatural, such as “keep family safe from such circumstances” and “property price rise with time.” These errors do not prevent understanding, but they limit the range and control of vocabulary. Check spelling carefully and learn common collocations for housing, ownership, and financial security.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of simple and complex sentences, including conditional structures such as “if a family is living in rented property, there could be several reasons…” and a contrastive clause beginning “but he fails to pay back in time.” This gives the response some structural variety, and the main ideas remain understandable. However, errors in agreement, articles, and sentence construction occur across the essay: “Owning a property give,” “owning home,” and “for most of people” need grammatical adjustment. There are also punctuation and capitalisation problems, for example beginning “for instance” with a lowercase letter after a full stop. Review subject–verb agreement, article use, and sentence boundaries, then proofread for consistent capitalisation.
