IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

From my perspective, buying a home rather than renting is good option, because it will save your money as well as reduce a lot of burden from the mind, and i strongly take it as positive thing.

Firstly, it will save your a lot of money, yet you invest a lot of money initially, but it is a form of investment, and this investment will stay with you, afterwards you can sale it anytime, and your investment will be in your hand again.Moreoever, you dont need to pay a huge amount of rent every month, so it will be a form of relief for you.Ultimately, you can use this money for other purposes, yet if you go for rent then a large part of your income will be spent as rent, and you will be lacked of enough money to spend on other needs.

Secondly, it will reduce a lot of pressure from your mind to pay your rent every month, so when you will buy a new home, instead of renting one you will be tension free, so it will also good for your health to prevent you from tension of rent to be paid, as a result you can save your monthly expenses to be paid on some other things, like buying new things for the well being of your home.

As a matter of fact, buying a new home inspite of renting will save your money and will be proved benificial for the health of your mind.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You give a clear overall view that home ownership is positive and offer two relevant reasons: it may build financial security and reduce the stress of monthly rent. However, the response only partly develops the task. The explanation of why owning a home is important in some countries is not explored beyond personal financial and emotional benefits, and the claims that ownership “will save” money and make someone “tension free” need qualification or supporting detail. The conclusion repeats the main points rather than adding insight. The response is also two words below the required minimum, so it does not meet the task’s length requirement. Develop the reasons with a specific example and explain why these benefits may matter particularly in the countries mentioned.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an opening position, two body paragraphs introduced by “Firstly” and “Secondly,” and a concluding sentence. This helps the reader follow the main line of argument. However, progression within paragraphs is often repetitive, with several ideas linked through repeated “so” and “and” rather than clearly showing how one point leads to the next. For example, the first body paragraph moves from investment to rent savings and then other expenses without clearly separating or developing these points. Some transitions, such as “yet,” do not express the intended relationship accurately. Use clearer topic sentences, divide long chains of ideas into shorter sentences, and use referencing and linking phrases more selectively.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the basic argument, including “investment,” “rent,” “monthly expenses,” and “well being.” However, the range is limited and several expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, which sometimes makes the reader pause. Examples include “reduce a lot of burden from the mind,” “you will be lacked of enough money,” and “tension of rent to be paid.” Spelling and word-form errors such as “Moreoever,” “sale” where you mean “sell,” and “benificial” also affect accuracy. Aim for more precise collocations and check spelling carefully. For instance, describe ownership as providing “financial security” and say that it may “ease financial pressure,” rather than relying repeatedly on “save money” and “tension.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including clauses joined with “because,” “so,” and “as a result.” However, the range is limited, and complex sentences are often faulty or difficult to follow. Examples include “buying a home rather than renting is good option,” which needs an article, and “when you will buy a new home,” where the future form is not appropriate after “when.” There are also errors in sentence boundaries and punctuation, such as missing spaces after full stops and commas, and the opening sentence joins several ideas into an unwieldy structure. Practise accurate articles, verb forms in time clauses, and sentence boundaries; then use a mix of shorter sentences and carefully controlled subordinate clauses.
