IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

People's preferrences are different with one another. Some people prefer to own a home rather than renting it. They think that renting can take up a lot of their savings. I think that this case is a positive situation to all people, as this will lessen commercial buildings throughout the city.

Owning a house is a big achievement for some people. They get to build and design whatever they like in their own home. This is good especially for large families as a house is more spacious compared to renting. This also benefits the person's financial situation as they don't have to pay for rent and they can allocate more budget on home essentials. For example, people can save up and budget their money for groceries, bills and utilities. However, it can be hard to maintain a house. Yearly renovation and maintenance are needed to have a safe house.

On the other hand, some countries prefer to rent instead rathen than buying their own house. This really depends on the person's situation because some people don't have enough money to afford a house. Some choose to rent because they don't need to buy any furnitures and essentials because it is all included. They don't have to worry about installing electricity, water and building because all are provided. The downside of renting is that they can't personalize their place on how they like it and also paying rent is too expensive and can affect a person's savings.

In conclusion, this decision really depends on the preference and financial capabilities of a person. I think that having your own place makes you feel safe in your environment. This can benefit the community for not building a lot of apartments or buildings in the area because this can result to congestion and overpopulation, which will be hard to maintain.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the question: you suggest reasons for home ownership, including the freedom to design a home and the possibility of avoiding rent, and you state that you see it as positive. The discussion of renting also adds relevant contrast. However, the reasons why owning is especially important in some countries are not explored in much depth, and the claim that ownership reduces commercial buildings and prevents congestion is asserted rather than explained. Some points, such as the benefits of renting furnished accommodation, receive more detail than the central question about why ownership matters. Develop the country-specific reasons and support your overall judgement with a clearer explanation of its wider effects.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs discussing ownership and renting, and a conclusion. The progression from advantages to disadvantages is generally easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the other hand” and “In conclusion” help orient the reader. However, some links between ideas are mechanical, and the relationship between your stated positive view and the later discussion of renting is not always clear. The conclusion introduces congestion and overpopulation without establishing that connection in the body. Use referencing and transitions more precisely, and make sure each paragraph develops the main line of argument rather than adding a new claim at the end.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “financial situation,” “maintenance,” “personalize,” and “congestion.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and the meaning is generally clear. However, several word-choice, spelling, and collocation problems reduce precision: “preferrences” is misspelled, “rathen” is incorrect, and “allocate more budget on home essentials” is not a natural phrase. “Commercial buildings” also does not clearly express the intended idea about apartments or housing development. Aim for more accurate topic-specific expressions and check spelling and collocations carefully; this would make your argument sound more controlled and precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses with “as,” “because,” and “which,” and most sentences communicate their meaning clearly. Some grammatical errors remain, but they rarely prevent understanding. For example, “Some people prefer to own a home rather than renting it” mixes parallel forms; use “to own … rather than to rent” or “owning … rather than renting.” In “they don't have to pay for rent and they can allocate,” the repeated subject could be joined more smoothly, while “because all are provided” has an unclear subject and would be clearer as “because these are provided.” Continue practising parallel structures, pronoun reference, and sentence control.
