IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In this contemporary era safe living place play an vital role in the security of every individuals. so that why this is widely argued that every citizen must has its own home rather then renting apartments.

I believe we should consider it as a positive statement because it have various type of benefits for overall communities.

In Pakistan most of the individuals think having an own home provides multiple advantages for every family member of the home. which include privacy , peace ,security and also the increase in the value of property is also consider as a financial benefit in Pakistani households. most of the people consider privacy as an important thing because in todays world you don't get privacy and security in an rented house ,problem can be cause due to location and living environment. Mental peace is also comes from the environment where you live, for example in big cities like Karachi if you need peaceful life you must have to own a private home because of environment and high rent cost in well located areas.

However, there can be multiple drawbacks in buying property which, includes high land cost in Urban areas, unavailability of new home due to high buying demands, and most of the people got fraud in buying new land due to less government regulations in rural areas of Pakistan.

In conclusion, private home provide security, peace and various benefits to individuals. renting can also be the reason of less satisfaction and overall well-being issues. I believe that every individuals must purchase their personal home according to their financial ability to live a relaxed life in this contemporary world.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both parts of the question: you suggest that ownership is valued for privacy, security, peace of mind and possible financial gain, and you clearly regard this preference as positive. The Pakistan examples, including high rents in well-located parts of Karachi, make the discussion relevant. You also acknowledge drawbacks such as high urban land costs and fraud, which adds balance. This meets the task well, but the reasons are not equally developed: the financial benefit and the claim that renting reduces satisfaction are asserted rather than explained or supported. To strengthen the response further, clarify why ownership matters socially or economically in these countries, and explain how the benefits outweigh the drawbacks.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a paragraph explaining benefits, a paragraph on drawbacks, and a conclusion that restates your view. This gives the reader an overall route through the argument. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes unclear, and some links feel mechanical. For example, the benefits paragraph moves from privacy to security, property value, mental peace and Karachi without clearly showing how each point connects. The opening fragment beginning “so that why” also weakens the transition from the first sentence. Use clearer topic sentences and develop one main idea at a time, with references that make relationships explicit. This would make the organisation more consistently easy to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “privacy,” “security,” “financial benefit,” “government regulations” and “buying demands.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and the reader can generally understand your position. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or repetitive, such as “safe living place,” “an own home,” “got fraud,” and “less satisfaction.” Some expressions also sound unnatural, including “overall communities” and “well-being issues.” Aim for precise, natural combinations rather than adding formal-sounding phrases. For instance, describe the security and financial advantages directly, and use consistent terms such as “homeownership” and “renting.” Proofreading spelling and spacing would also improve the overall control of vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a relative clause in “the environment where you live” and a contrast introduced by “However.” Meaning is usually recoverable, but errors occur across sentence structures and often make the writing less controlled. Examples include “safe living place play,” “it have various type,” and “every individuals must purchase,” where agreement and number are incorrect. There are also faulty sentence boundaries, such as the fragment “which include privacy,” and inconsistent capitalization after full stops. Practise building accurate subject–verb patterns and checking articles, plurals and sentence boundaries. Shorter, well-controlled sentences would help you express the same ideas more clearly while you develop complex structures.
