IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In some parts of the world, having one's own home is preffered rather than renting one. This could be the case because people often need the sense of security as well as the reduced worry of having to pay rent every month. In my opinion, i believe it to be a positive situation.
Firstly, the primary reason could be the feeling of being secure in one's own place. As human beings have the tendency to incline towards safety and sense of belongingness, having a safe space that they can call home would definitely be of importance to them. For instance, a person living in their own home does not have to think twice about making a change to it or doing what they want to it, whereas, a person who's renting a home would inevitably re-think and/or consider asking the owner before making any change.
Secondly, another main reason could definitely be the responsibility of paying the due rent at the beginning of each month. With rapid increase in living costs and taxes simultaneously, people can often experience the lack of finances. For example, an average person who's working on an hourly wage would ultimately not be able to pay high amounts of rent. Similarly, managing rent with groceries, essentials, food and transport, can definitely feel like a huge burden.
In conclusion, there is obviously a more positive side to this situation. As people give much more importance to owning a property/house as compared to choosing to rent a house.Because evidently, owning one's own house could serve alot more benefits than having to pay rent for one.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both parts of the prompt: you explain why people may prefer ownership, citing security, freedom to alter a home, and the pressure of monthly rent, and you clearly state that you see this as positive. These are relevant reasons, and the examples about renters needing permission and workers facing high costs help illustrate them. However, the discussion of financial pressure is more about why renting is difficult than why owning is important, and the positive judgement is asserted rather than fully examined. The conclusion repeats the view that ownership has more benefits but does not specify or weigh those benefits. Develop the link between each reason and the preference for ownership, and explain any limitations of this situation to make the response more fully supported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs signposted by “Firstly” and “Secondly,” and a conclusion. The ideas generally progress from security and control to financial concerns, so the reader can follow the main argument. However, some linking is mechanical or repetitive: “could be” and “definitely” recur, and “Secondly, another main reason” combines two signals that perform the same function. The conclusion begins with a sentence fragment (“As people give much more importance… Because evidently…”), which weakens the connection between the final ideas. Use fewer formulaic transitions and connect the conclusion in complete sentences; clearer referencing between the examples and the claims would also improve flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for the topic, including “sense of security,” “sense of belonging,” “living costs,” and “financial burden.” These expressions help communicate the main points, and the meaning remains clear. There are also attempts at less common or more formal wording, such as “inevitably” and “simultaneously,” but some choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “incline towards safety,” “the responsibility of paying the due rent,” and “serve a lot more benefits” do not fit their intended meanings or collocations. Spelling and form issues such as “preffered,” “alot,” and “i” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural topic-specific phrases, for example “prefer home ownership,” “meet monthly rent payments,” and “offer greater benefits,” and check spelling and capitalization.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex structures, including the contrast between owners and renters in “whereas” clauses and the conditional idea “would ultimately not be able to pay.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical and punctuation errors remain. The opening has a run-on boundary (“renting one. This”), and the conclusion contains incomplete sentences beginning with “As” and “Because.” There are also issues with capitalization (“i”), article use (“need the sense of security”), and punctuation around examples and lists. These errors do not usually prevent understanding, but they make the writing less controlled. Practise joining dependent clauses to complete main clauses, and proofread sentence boundaries, articles, and commas.
