IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Having own house is one of the blessings that everyone wants in their life.Everyone wants to buy house at a very beautiful place. In some countries owning a home is a very important thing for most of the people than renting.

To begin with, renting is very costly in many countries and the cost of it increases every year as per the agreement.Due to the higher prices, people have to move from the developed cities to the urban areas.Moving from one place to another is very disturbing thing specially for the people who have families. That is why, they prefer buying a home rather than renting.

In addition, you have to very careful with things while renting a home.If the owner of the house blames you for something but you can't do anything about it because you think about your family that you have to struggle again for renting another home.

Moreover with renting home, people can't do that much changing with the home.If you have a home you can decorate it as you like. You can build a lawn with colorful flowers and you can also put the seeds of different vegetables. From that you can have organic food and it will also benefit your health.

Last but not least, in our culture if a guy doesn't have his own house,it is considered very awful. If a family come for a marriage proposol and when they hear that the guy doesn't even own a house ,they mostly reject them. That's why having a home is more important than renting it.

From my perspective,it is a very positive situation.Everyone should have aim in their life,no matter whatever it is.Without aim your life is directionless. When they have aim in their life they will encourage themselves to push harder in their life and do good for their families.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both parts of the question: you give reasons for preferring ownership, including rising rent, the disruption of moving, greater freedom to alter a home, and cultural expectations, then state that you see this as positive. These points are relevant, but the explanation is uneven and often asserted rather than developed. For example, the discussion of being blamed by a landlord is difficult to follow, and the marriage-proposal example is presented as a cultural fact without explaining how widely it applies. Your final point about having an aim shifts towards motivation in general rather than explaining why home ownership itself is positive. Develop fewer reasons with clearer explanation and examples, and keep the positive/negative evaluation directly tied to the social importance of owning a home.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for reasons, and a concluding personal view. Sequencing phrases such as “To begin with,” “In addition,” and “Moreover” help signal the next point. However, progression is sometimes mechanical, and the links between ideas are not always clear. The paragraph about renting moves from being blamed by an owner to the difficulty of finding another home without fully explaining the connection. The final paragraph also introduces life goals rather abruptly. Use clearer topic sentences and make each paragraph develop one central reason; connect examples explicitly to the claim they support. Check referencing so that pronouns such as “they” have an unmistakable antecedent.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “renting,” “agreement,” “decorate,” “organic food,” and “families.” There are also attempts at more descriptive language, such as “directionless” and “push harder.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations sound unnatural or imprecise, which sometimes makes the meaning less clear. Examples include “very awful” for social disapproval, “do that much changing with the home,” and “beautiful place,” which does not add much to the argument. Spelling errors such as “proposol” also affect accuracy. Build a more precise set of phrases for housing costs, residential stability, and social expectations, and check spelling and collocations when editing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including conditional forms such as “If you have a home you can decorate it as you like” and a reason clause beginning “That is why.” This gives the response some structural variety, but control is inconsistent, and errors in sentence formation, articles, agreement, and punctuation recur. For instance, “Having own house” needs an article, “you have to very careful” is missing a verb, and “If a family come” has a subject–verb agreement error. Several sentences also run together without appropriate spacing or punctuation, such as the opening and the marriage example. Practise accurate article use and complete clause structures, then proofread sentence boundaries and commas. Greater accuracy would make your reasoning easier to follow.
