IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Home is where we spend most of our time with family members everyday. It is more than just a place of relaxation; it is our comfort zone. In some places around the world, owning a home is very important; while in some countries, renting is preferred. People have varied reasons, both positive and negative, for owning and renting a home.
To start with, people in some countries prefer to own a home rather than renting, because it gives personal satisfaction knowing that they have something that they can call their own. Surely, no one wants to work all their life having to rent forever. Additonally, rent prices these days are rocketing high. In fact, I, personally, would prefer to own a house rather than rent. In the Philippines, it is very common to own a house. There's that different sense of ownership when you have your own house where you can do whatever you want, without having restrictions. Renting has a lot of do's and don'ts. No one has the energy to keep up with those knowing how busy life gets these days. However, we also need to take into consideration the huge amount of money that a person needs to own a home. Not all people have the financial capability to own one. Hence, some people prefer to rent. Renting is advantageous to those who have just started in life. Examples are young couples or even young professionals who may want to start life on their own. Renting is more accessible knowing that they do not need to put up so much money for it. Here in America, for instance, renting is very common. People who are here for temporary jobs rent a house, which is an excellent way of saving money while working. Young professionals, too, who seek to be more independent rent a house to work and save. Unfortunately, when one rents a home for so long, he or she may be missing the opportunity to actually own one. Nowadays, there are rent- to- own programs where one can rent and eventually own the house after several years. This may be a better option for people as well.
In a nutshell, people in different countries have different preferences when it comes to owning or renting a house. Either way, we have to acknowldege that whatever one prefers, either rent or own, there are always coresspoding advantages and disadvanatges. What is important is that people know how to weigh things carefully according to what suits best to a person's situation.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You address both questions: you explain why ownership matters through personal satisfaction, control over the home, and rising rents, then discuss why renting suits people with limited funds or temporary work. However, the response does not clearly answer whether the importance placed on owning a home is positive or negative. The conclusion says that both choices have advantages and disadvantages and that people should choose what suits them, which avoids taking a definite position on the situation described in the prompt. Several points, such as the rent-to-own option and the examples of young professionals, are relevant but not fully connected to your overall judgement. State your view directly and develop it with reasons and consequences.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a substantial discussion of ownership and renting, and a concluding paragraph. Linking phrases such as “To start with,” “However,” and “In a nutshell” help readers follow the shift between benefits and drawbacks. The main body, though, combines several distinct points—ownership, affordability, temporary work, and rent-to-own schemes—in one long paragraph, so the progression becomes less controlled. Some connections are also mechanical, and the conclusion repeats the contrast without resolving the essay’s central question. Use separate paragraphs for the reasons ownership is valued and for your evaluation, then make each paragraph’s main point explicit and link examples back to it.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “personal satisfaction,” “financial capability,” “temporary jobs,” and “rent-to-own programs.” These expressions help explain ownership and renting, and the meaning is generally clear. There are, however, some imprecise or informal choices: “rocketing high” is not a natural collocation, “do’s and don’ts” is conversational, and “different sense of ownership” is vague. Spelling errors such as “Additonally,” “acknowldege,” and “disadvanatges” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise academic phrasing and proofread carefully; for example, explain that ownership offers greater control, while renting may involve restrictions set by a landlord.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, and many sentences communicate their meaning clearly. Structures such as “Renting is advantageous to those who have just started in life” and “when one rents a home for so long” show some control of subordinate clauses and general statements. Some grammatical and punctuation issues remain. The opening uses a semicolon awkwardly in “owning a home is very important; while…,” and “No one wants to work all their life having to rent forever” has an unclear construction. The sentence beginning “Examples are young couples…” is also a fragment. Review sentence boundaries and make sure examples are integrated into complete sentences. These issues rarely prevent understanding, but greater consistency would strengthen accuracy.
