IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.0)
People always wants to have their own home where they can live freely rather than living in the rented house or any apartment. I believe, renting apartment or house is a postive situation due to various reasons.
In many countries, every person has a goal to have their own home where they can spend their whole life without pressure or any tension. Owning your home is a blessed thing in everyone's life. You can do anything in your house whatever you want. Person can build and decorate their home independently. Also, they can set their garden which makes the feeling of happiness and joy.
If individuals have their own house, they do not have to pay rent and in several countries, renting any house is much expensive. They have to spend their life under the rules of the owner. if you break any material or thing, you have to pay extra fees for that material. Another reason is that if a person lives in a rented house, there will be a stress and tension in their mind that what if they have to leave this home in any situation or any time, what will they do after that. So, these type of questions the people always had in their mind, They live their whole life under the pressue and overthinking. They can't decorate or do anything without the permission of the owner.
In conclusion, building your own house is just like acheiving one of the poeple's big dream. It makes the person free of other extra charges which you have to pay in case of rented house.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You address both parts of the prompt: you suggest that home ownership matters because it offers freedom, personalisation and security, and you state that renting is positive. However, the position is inconsistent. The opening says renting is positive, while most of the essay argues that owning a home is preferable, and the conclusion praises ownership without returning to your stated view. This makes your answer to whether the situation is positive or negative unclear. The reasons are relevant, such as avoiding rent and the worry of having to leave, but they are mostly asserted rather than explained or supported. To strengthen the response, make your position consistent and develop each reason with a clear explanation or example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic paragraph structure, moving from an introduction to reasons and then a conclusion, and phrases such as “Another reason” help signal a new point. However, the overall progression is weakened by the contradiction between the opening claim that renting is positive and the later argument for ownership. Several ideas are repeated, particularly freedom from an owner’s rules and the ability to decorate, rather than being organised into distinct, developed points. Some links are awkward or unclear, as in “So, these type of questions the people always had in their mind.” Use a clearer sequence—reasons people value ownership, followed by your evaluation—and make references and transitions more precise.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a relevant range of vocabulary for the topic, including “permission,” “extra charges,” “decorate,” and “pressure,” and the reader can generally understand your meaning. There are also attempts at more expressive language, such as “a blessed thing” and “one of the people’s big dream,” though these are not natural or precise in this context. Repetition of “house,” “home,” “stress,” and “tension” limits flexibility, while spelling errors such as “postive,” “pressue,” and “acheiving” reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural collocations and a wider set of terms, for example “housing costs,” “tenants,” and “long-term security,” while checking spelling and word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more extended sentences, including conditional structures such as “If individuals have their own house, they do not have to pay rent.” However, errors are frequent, and some complex sentences are difficult to follow. Examples include “People always wants,” where the subject and verb do not agree, and “Person can build,” which needs an article or plural subject. The sentence beginning “So, these type of questions” has problems with agreement and word order, while “what if they have to leave this home … what will they do” is not controlled as an indirect question. Capitalisation after full stops is also inconsistent. Practise accurate sentence patterns and check agreement, articles, and punctuation when editing.
