IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, in some part of the world having your own home than renting is becoming crucial for individuals. The reason could be because they want to live comfortably together with their family. Although living in your own home has positive aspects, in my perspective it is a negative development, because it can hider your flexibility.

Living in your own home can have the freedom to live with your family comfortably. Some people tend to live together with their family.Your own home can be a conducive environment to enjoy life with your family, because renting a house cane be expensive or there might not be enough space that can accommadate the whole family. For this reason people prefer possessing their own home than renting. So that, this can help them from family isolation.

However, changing from your own home to another home can be difficult. Mostly the location of our home depends on the distance to the work or daily services such as schools, grocery stores, and healthcare. For instance, if the location of former workplace is changed to another city, relocating to other city can be difficult. This is because, selling your own home to change to another city is a quite difficult task. So, living in your own home cannot be flexible when changing workplace or services.

In conclusion, having your own home is crucial for individuals in some countries. Although it is beneficial interms of living with family, it is not flexible when changing location of workplace or other services.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the question: you suggest that people value home ownership because it allows families to live together comfortably, and you clearly judge the trend negatively because it can restrict relocation. The example of moving when a workplace changes city supports your position. However, the explanation of why ownership matters is less fully developed: the points about expense, space and avoiding “family isolation” are introduced quickly, and the link between them could be clearer. The negative view is also mainly supported through one consequence. To strengthen the response, explain the reasons in more depth and consider whether the importance of ownership may also relate to security or long-term investment, while keeping your own position clear.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph explaining a reason for ownership, a contrasting paragraph about reduced flexibility, and a conclusion that restates your view. The progression from family comfort to the difficulty of relocating is easy to follow, and phrases such as “For instance” help introduce an example. At times, however, links feel mechanical or unclear. “So that” does not connect naturally to the preceding sentence, and “For this reason” repeats the same cause-and-effect pattern. Some references, such as “our home” and “former workplace,” could be more precise. Use a wider range of natural transitions and make the relationship between each supporting point explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “conducive environment,” “relocating,” “flexible,” and “healthcare,” which helps communicate the main ideas. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “family isolation.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, though: “having your own home than renting,” “possessing their own home,” and “changing from your own home to another home” do not express the intended comparisons smoothly. Spelling errors such as “hider” and “accommadate” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural collocations such as “owning rather than renting,” “buying a home,” and “move to another city,” and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a concessive opening (“Although living in your own home has positive aspects…”) and a conditional example beginning “if the location… is changed.” Most of the meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect fluency. For example, “Living in your own home can have the freedom” has an unclear subject construction; “people prefer possessing… than renting” uses an incorrect comparison pattern; and “selling your own home to change to another city is a quite difficult task” has awkward article placement and sentence construction. There are also punctuation and spacing issues, including the missing space after “family.” Practise accurate comparison structures and review sentence boundaries and articles.
