IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Buying a house is very significant for individuals than live in rental house in some nations.

Firstly, house is a necessary thing for every person in this world and owning a home is like an achievement because not every person can afford to buy a home for them and their family. There are some nations where owning a house is very important such as India. In addition, rents of properties getting increasing. People are not enough able to pay rent as well because jobs are not there in the country. People are unemployed and ratio of unemployment is drastically inclining everyday. For instance, a person without a job in the country like India is not able to pay rent because of the unemployment in India and in many cases people are doing suicide because of the peer pressure.

However, I think that this is a negative situation and national government should solve this problem by giving job opportunities to unemployed people of the country. In addition, government should expand their projects on international level as well because many skilled people of the country and mainly young generation of the country can grab that opportunity so they can make enough money that at least they can pay rent of the house. For example, my friend was unemployed two years ago but he made decent amount of money for paying rent or buy a house after he got government job opportunity in IT department.

To conclude this, owning house is a dream of many people in some country but due to some reasons such as unemployment they are not enough able to buy a house and this is negative impact on youth of the nation

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both parts of the question: you suggest that home ownership is valued as an achievement and connect the issue to rising rents and unemployment, then clearly state that you see the situation as negative. However, the explanation of why ownership matters is only partly developed; the claim that a house is “necessary” does not explain the particular importance attached to owning rather than renting. The response also shifts towards unemployment and government job programmes, so the causes of the preference for ownership receive less attention than the proposed solution. The examples about India and your friend are relevant, but the personal example mainly illustrates employment, not why people prefer to own homes. Develop the social or financial reasons for ownership and link each example directly to the question.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an opening, a paragraph explaining the issue, a paragraph giving your view and a concluding summary. Connectors such as “Firstly,” “However,” and “To conclude” help signal these stages. Within paragraphs, though, progression is sometimes mechanical, and several ideas are joined without a clear relationship. For example, the discussion moves from rising rents to unemployment and then suicide, without explaining how these points establish why owning a home is important. References such as “this problem” and “that opportunity” are not always precise. To strengthen the organisation, group related causes together, use clearer links between claims and examples, and make the conclusion restate the main reasoning rather than introduce a broad summary.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “owning a home,” “unemployed,” “job opportunities,” and “government job opportunity.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations sound unnatural, which sometimes makes the meaning less precise. For instance, “ratio of unemployment is drastically inclining” is not a natural way to describe a rise in unemployment, while “make enough money that at least they can pay rent” is awkwardly expressed. Repetition of “country,” “house,” and “opportunity” also limits flexibility. Aim to use more precise housing and economic terms, and check whether words naturally combine in English. The suggestions below offer alternatives that fit your intended meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentence forms, including sentences with “because” and “after,” and your main message is generally understandable. However, the range is limited, and errors recur in sentence construction, articles, agreement and verb forms. For example, “individuals than live in rental house” has an incorrect relative clause and comparison structure; “rents of properties getting increasing” is missing an auxiliary verb; and “government should expand their projects” has an agreement problem. Articles and plurals also need attention, as in “owning house” and “some country.” Practise building accurate complex sentences, then check each sentence for a complete verb, correct subject–verb agreement, and appropriate articles. Greater accuracy would make your ideas easier to follow.
