IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

In some countries people believe on that owning a home is important rather than renting one. This mindest give both impacts positive and negative as well. Yes, this is possible to owning a house is far better than renting one because there are several reasons like if you live in a rental house you should pay for it every month. If you own a house then you did not need to pay for living.

Firslty, we discuss the positive impacts of this statement. The first impact, you did not need to pay any rent for living. The second impact you, utilize and modify it according to your choice. The third impact you dont need to worry about if there is any issue happened in home for example electicity issue and if something is broken you fix it according to your wish which solution suits you.

Furthermore, now we discuss negative impacts of this statement.

for example if a person who live in rental house society judge him and give respoect according to his condition. This is bad behaviour because everyone cannot buy home. So, i think this statement has negative impact. This situation lead people to judge eachother just by house. This statement has positive impacts but still nowadays people only prefer to sit with that person who have owning a home rahter rental one.

As a result, i thinlk this is negative situation but owning a home is possible but not everyone afford it and people judge each other by just this thing.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both questions: you suggest that ownership avoids monthly rent and allows people to adapt a home, and you judge the social preference for ownership negatively because it can lead to unfair judgement. However, the explanation of why owning a home matters is brief, and the response shifts between saying ownership is better and calling the situation negative without clearly distinguishing the financial benefits from the social pressure. The negative point about people being judged is relevant, but it needs a fuller explanation or a concrete example. Develop each main reason with a clear cause and consequence, and state your overall position consistently—for example, ownership may benefit individuals, while treating renters as inferior is harmful.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has separate paragraphs and a recognisable sequence, moving from an introduction to benefits, then drawbacks and a conclusion. Basic signposting such as “Firstly,” “Furthermore” and “As a result” helps readers follow the broad structure. However, progression within paragraphs is limited: the benefits are listed rather than connected, and the final paragraph largely repeats the point about judging people. Some transitions are mechanical, particularly “now we discuss negative impacts,” while the opening and conclusion do not clearly frame the same position. Use topic sentences that express one central idea, then explain and support it; link the financial and social arguments more explicitly, and avoid repeating the same claim in the conclusion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “rent,” “modify,” “issue,” and “judge.” However, the range is limited and several phrases are repetitive or imprecise, such as repeated use of “impact” and “statement.” There are also noticeable spelling and word-choice problems, including “mindest,” “respoect,” “electicity,” and “rahter,” which reduce accuracy and polish. Some expressions are unnatural, for example “pay for living” and “sit with that person.” Build a more precise set of terms for housing and social attitudes, and check spelling carefully. Replacing repeated general words with accurate alternatives will make the argument clearer and more appropriate for an academic essay.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences, including a conditional structure beginning “if you live in a rental house.” However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences difficult to follow. Examples include “people believe on that,” “This mindest give,” “you did not need to pay,” and “a person who live,” which show problems with verb forms, agreement and sentence construction. The sentence beginning “The second impact you” is also incomplete or incorrectly joined. Practise forming accurate clauses with clear subjects and verbs, and check tense and agreement in each sentence. More reliable control of basic structures should come before adding longer, more complex sentences.
