IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Owning a home in a country is an important achievement for some people while other prefer to have rented home for themselves.
This idea of buying or renting a home varies among the different mindset of people. Business minded people are more focused to buy a home in a country because they have enough resources which can be used. Such individuals also consider having their own home as an investment and could be helpful in any future disruption. Others are those who believe that renting will be an easier option and they don't want to invest a heavy amount of money in such entity.
They prefer to invest in any other business or idea rather than owning a home. For them, owning a home is not important and believe that wherever they are living is their home and need not to sign any ownership paper to have that feeling.
I am also in the favor of owning a home of yours because it gives you a sense of security which is never associated with a rented house. Having a house of yours have a positive impact on your mind because you are not answerable or acccountable for any damage if ever made to the walls, ceilings or doors. You are fully responsible for maintaining the house as per your design. There are some countries which allows special advantages if a person own a property. For example, UAE makes you eligible of having Golden Visa if you own a property of 2 million in the country.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address both parts of the question: you suggest that some people buy homes as an investment and for security, and you clearly favour ownership. The example of property ownership qualifying someone for a UAE Golden Visa gives your view a concrete illustration. However, the explanation of why home ownership is especially important in some countries remains limited; the response mainly contrasts business-minded buyers with renters, without exploring broader cultural or social reasons. Your positive position is clear, but several supporting points are asserted rather than fully explained—for example, the claim that ownership provides security could be developed by explaining how it protects people from rent increases or eviction. More specific development of the causes and consequences would make the response more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a recognisable structure: it introduces the contrast, discusses reasons for renting and buying, and then presents your own view. Paragraph breaks help separate these stages. However, the progression is not consistently clear: the second paragraph moves from business-minded buyers to future disruption, while the next shifts to renters without a strong link between the ideas. Connectors such as “Others” and “For them” help, but some references are unclear, particularly “this idea” and “such entity.” The final paragraph also combines several points—security, responsibility for damage, design, and visa benefits—without clearly ordering or linking them. Use a more deliberate sequence and clearer referencing to guide the reader through each argument.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “investment,” “sense of security,” “ownership,” and “eligible,” and the Golden Visa example shows an attempt to use precise topic-related language. However, the range is limited in places, and several choices or combinations sound unnatural or imprecise, such as “business minded people,” “invest a heavy amount,” and “any future disruption.” “Entity” is also an unsuitable word for a home in this context. Spelling errors such as “acccountable” are noticeable. Aim for more natural collocations and a wider range of terms for housing and financial security, while checking spelling and choosing words that fit the intended meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses with “because” and “if,” but control is inconsistent and errors occur frequently enough to affect fluency. Examples include “other prefer” instead of “others prefer,” “Having a house of yours have” instead of “Having your own house has,” and “There are some countries which allows” instead of “There are some countries that allow.” The sentence beginning “For them, owning a home is not important” also lacks a clear grammatical subject for “believe.” Articles and possessives need attention, as in “a rented home” and “your own home.” Practise checking subject–verb agreement and sentence completeness, then vary sentence patterns while keeping each clause accurate.
