IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In some nations, people consider that getting their own home is crucial than renting one. This is because they get to feel an ownership of a property. In my opinion, this is a positive situation because people won't have to worry about the due rents.
People would be able to experience how owning a house feels like. Most of the people have a main goal in their life to build or live in their dream homes. People living in a rented house wouldn't be able to experience a feeling of connection with the building they are residing as they are just a temporary occupants for that particular house.
I believe this is a positive development, most of the people are concerned about paying rents on time. Many people who are residing in a rented property had a hard times to make savings, as most of their earnings are compensated in a rent. For instance, most of the students studying abroad keeps on shifting their rooms due to the high rents and are bound to live in areas that are far from cities and their universities. Hence, buying the house would solve that problem and people could live fear free without having to worry about the remaining dues. Therefore they would be able to make savings in long term even though the inital cost of owning a house might be high.
In conclusion, most of the individuals prefer buying a house over renting them as they will get to experience an ownership feeling and it is a positive attitude as worrying about paying the rent would be least of the concern for most of the people.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both parts of the question and state a clear view: home ownership is important because it gives people a sense of ownership, and you consider this positive because it removes rent concerns. The discussion of tenants’ limited connection to a property and the example of students moving because of high rents are relevant. However, the reasons are not developed equally: the sense of connection is asserted rather than explained, while the financial argument receives more support. The claim that buying a house would solve the problem also needs qualification, since ownership brings mortgage payments and other costs. To strengthen the response, explain more fully why ownership matters in the countries mentioned and support each reason with a precise explanation or example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the reasons and your evaluation, and a conclusion that restates your position. Ideas generally progress from the emotional value of ownership to the financial advantages, and linking expressions such as “For instance,” “Hence,” and “Therefore” help show relationships. However, the second and third paragraphs overlap in discussing the benefits of ownership, and the conclusion largely repeats the introduction rather than drawing the points together. Some links feel mechanical, particularly the sequence of “Hence” and “Therefore.” Improve progression by giving each body paragraph a distinct focus and using clearer references to connect claims with their supporting examples.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “ownership,” “rented property,” “earnings,” “savings,” and “initial cost.” These choices make the subject clear, and phrases such as “dream homes” help express the personal value of owning a home. However, several collocations and word choices are inaccurate or unnatural, including “feel an ownership,” “compensated in a rent,” and “live fear free.” There is also a spelling error in “inital.” These issues do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim to learn common housing and finance collocations as complete phrases, and check spelling and word forms during revision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a reason clause with “as” and a conditional structure in “even though the initial cost … might be high.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “crucial than renting” needs a comparative form, and “a hard times” has an article–number mismatch. In “most of the students … keeps,” the subject and verb do not agree; “students … are” would be appropriate. The sentence beginning “I believe this is a positive development, most of the people…” also joins two independent clauses with only a comma. Work on agreement, articles and sentence boundaries, while continuing to use varied structures.
