IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many people argue that, in some countries, owning a house is very important than renting. Although there are drawbacks in acquiring one, I believe that there are more benefits in becoming a homeowner.

Arguably, people uses bank loans in order to own a house. Undoubtedly, a house construction requires a huge amount of cash, and people use staggered payments in order to settle their responsibilities. For instance, owners often resorts to loan agreements with the bank even if banks usually offer high interest. As a result, most home owners tends to pay more than their allocated budget for the house.

However, being a house owner signifies an important ownership, especially to those working for several years that would like to acquire one to be part of their assets. Additionally, renters who have been paying for years usually resorts to buying a house to avoid monthy payments which eventually will not become their ownership. In return, people who opts to acuire their own property gains additional asset.

Additionally, in some countries, owning a house is a part of one's tradition and culture to show their families that they are ready and prepared to start a family. In fact, some elderly view this as becoming independent and that the person is now responsible enough to start a family. Therefore, single adult male buys own their property to start their own family.

In conclusion, owning a house can be costly to some and that it requires proper planning and budgeting. I believe that a person can greatly benefit in owning a house as it shows their hardwork has paid off and that they are now prepared to start their families.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you consider home ownership beneficial, despite its costs, and the response addresses both why it matters and whether this is positive or negative. The cultural explanation—that owning a home can signal readiness for family life and independence—is relevant, as is the point that mortgage payments build an asset. However, the reasons are not developed equally. The discussion of loans mainly describes the expense of buying rather than explaining why ownership is especially important in some countries, and the family-tradition point would benefit from a clearer explanation of its social significance. Develop each main reason with a specific example or consequence, and make the positive-versus-negative judgement more explicit throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate body paragraphs and a conclusion. Paragraphs generally focus on distinct points, and signposts such as “However,” “Additionally” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the argument. Some connections are less clear or feel mechanical: “However” introduces a benefit after a paragraph about costs, but the contrast could be explained more directly, while “In return” does not clearly show the relationship between renting and gaining an asset. The conclusion repeats the main ideas rather than drawing them together. Use linking phrases that express the precise relationship between ideas, and make references such as “one” or “this” unmistakably clear.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “bank loans,” “interest,” “assets,” “tradition and culture,” and “budgeting,” which allows you to discuss financial and social reasons for ownership. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “staggered payments” and “acquire their own property.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “an important ownership,” “settle their responsibilities,” and “additional asset.” Spelling errors such as “monthy,” “acuire” and “hardwork” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural combinations such as “build equity,” “meet mortgage repayments” and “a valuable asset,” and proofread spelling and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response includes both simple sentences and attempts at more complex structures, for example the clause beginning “Although there are drawbacks…” and the sentence explaining that renters may buy to avoid ongoing payments. Meaning is generally understandable, but some errors in agreement, verb forms and sentence construction remain. Examples include “people uses,” “owners often resorts,” and “most home owners tends,” where plural subjects require plural verbs. The construction “single adult male buys own their property” is also grammatically unclear, and “people who opts … gains” has agreement errors. Review subject–verb agreement and ensure each sentence has a complete, consistent structure. More accurate control of these patterns would make the argument easier to read.
