IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

In today's world owning or renting a home is a crucial factor for lifestyle or habitat and considerable case to discuss ,

People of some countries like japan ,India ,USA believe to owning a home is more benifical while rather than renting one so from where i stand i must say this is a best option instead of paying big chunks in rent we should buy home.

Every aspects have there own pros and cons , here buying or renting house have advantages which overweigh its disadvantage, For example people who have a vast family and person who have a nuclear family they both have there different need for space where the individuals decide there living options on basis of there occupation some people who have there homes but still they have to rent houses due to migrations because job needed migration sometimes.

If we own house that could be far better by paying big amount in rents in specifically citites like mumbai, delhi, newyork and tokyo where the people easily buy home loans where emi amount is very similary in compare to rent so what makes it beneficial is have a good amount of space ,own property where we can do anything without taking permission of any land lord as the land is limited on planet earth in future it will gives you best investment option also there are plenty of benefits owning a home include one of them are parking area for car where in rental property owner park his own car many time this issue has been observerd so apart from this there are numerous benefits.

on other hand buying home does has some con's where i would say renting home not totaly a bad option for example if you are working at xyz company and your compan

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You give a clear general preference for owning a home, and you offer relevant reasons, including avoiding rent, having more control over the property, and treating it as an investment. However, the task is only partly addressed: the reasons why home ownership is especially important in some countries are not clearly explained, and the positive/negative judgement is asserted rather than fully developed. The comparison with renting begins in the final paragraph, but the response ends mid-sentence (“if your compan…”), so the counterargument and conclusion are missing. Develop two main reasons with specific explanation, then state directly whether this social preference is positive or negative and why. This would make your position more consistent and your ideas better supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is some organisation: the response moves from an introduction to advantages, examples, and then a contrast with renting. Paragraph breaks help signal these stages. However, progression is difficult to follow because several ideas are crowded into very long sentences, and links such as “For example,” “so,” and “apart from this” do not always show the relationship between points clearly. The final paragraph is incomplete, leaving the discussion without a conclusion. Some references, such as “this issue,” are also unclear because the reader must infer which parking problem is meant. Use shorter, focused paragraphs, give each one a clear central point, and connect examples explicitly to that point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You attempt vocabulary relevant to housing and finance, including “property,” “migration,” “home loans,” “investment option,” and “nuclear family.” This gives you some range beyond basic words. However, the range is limited and several noticeable spelling, word-form, and collocation errors make parts of the response difficult to understand, such as “considerable case to discuss,” “paying big chunks in rent,” and “the land is limited on planet earth.” Some words are repeated, especially “benefits,” “home,” and “rent,” while “xyz company” is too informal and vague for this essay. Choose more precise expressions and check spelling; for example, explain that ownership may provide “long-term financial security” rather than relying on broad claims about benefits.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt to combine ideas using subordinate clauses and contrast, for example, “where the people easily buy home loans where emi amount is…” and “if you are working at xyz company…”. However, complex sentences are often faulty or incomplete, and frequent errors can make the intended meaning hard to follow. Examples include “Every aspects have there own pros and cons,” “buying or renting house have advantages,” and “buying home does has some con's.” There are also problems with articles, agreement, verb forms, and sentence boundaries. Practise building accurate simple sentences first, then add one dependent clause at a time. Check that each sentence has a complete subject and verb, and use punctuation to separate independent ideas.
