IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Decided to become a owner of a home in some country is very major important than renting for owner. It has both positives and negatives but i believe it has more benefits than drawbacks.

Firstly, if some of the residents from other country stayed for job or else for the purpose of something . Some of the country has high accomendation so, it will be better to buy a home and stay at own house. It benefits because if one of the other country resident decide to stay in ther job on-site, it requires to spend high accomendation so it is better to pay EMI instead of rent that helps to become a owner of house. The country citizen decided to stay long at their workplace it more benefits. Along with that some people enjoys a lot that he or she should be called as a owner of house.

Secondly, owning of house in some countries are also have negatives. However, when take a step to buy a house to stay but later on if one of the family member who working their can be transfer with some reasons. Location changes to some other country, it should be definitely dissappoints. we need to give our house for someone to stay for rent and we feel like the people who staying in our home are not good in cleaning. So, it will become old and looks bad, that much problem we face in some situations.

In conclusion, some people believe that it is better to buy a house in some country rather paying a rent. It has both negatives and positives, it benefits for the people who decided to work long their and if effects for a temporary job candits who decided to become a owner of the house in other country.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You give a clear overall preference for home ownership, stating that it has “more benefits than drawbacks,” and you attempt to address both why people value owning and whether this is positive or negative. However, the explanation of why ownership matters is only partly developed: the points about high accommodation costs and staying near a long-term job are relevant, but the reasoning is difficult to follow and the personal pride point is not explained. The negative side focuses mainly on the possibility of a work transfer and tenants not maintaining the property, while the final reference to temporary workers is unclear. Develop each main reason with a clear explanation or example, and make your positive judgement explicit in the conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs signposted by “Firstly” and “Secondly,” and a conclusion. This helps the reader identify the intended contrast between benefits and drawbacks. However, progression within paragraphs is uneven: the first paragraph moves from overseas residents and accommodation costs to job location and pride in ownership without clearly connecting these points. Some references, such as “it” and “that much problem,” are unclear, and the conclusion introduces “temporary job candidates” without preparing this idea earlier. Use one central idea per paragraph, connect each supporting sentence explicitly to it, and make pronoun references precise. This would make the organisation more coherent and reduce the sense of abrupt or mechanical linking.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “rent,” “owner,” “workplace,” “transfer,” and “location changes,” so the reader can identify the general subject. However, the range is limited and several inaccurate word choices or collocations make meaning difficult to interpret. For example, “high accomendation” is repeated where you mean high accommodation costs or rent, and “stay in ther job on-site” does not express the intended idea naturally. Spelling errors such as “dissappoints” and “candits” also reduce clarity. Build a more precise set of housing and employment terms, and check spelling and word forms. Choosing familiar, accurate expressions is more effective than attempting phrases whose meaning is unclear.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentence forms, including conditional ideas such as “if one of the family member … can be transfer,” but complex constructions are often faulty and make the message hard to follow. Errors occur in articles, agreement, verb forms, and sentence boundaries: “a owner” should be “an owner,” “some of the country has” needs a plural subject, and “it should be definitely dissappoints” does not form a grammatical clause. Several sentences also combine multiple ideas without clear punctuation, as in the discussion of a transfer and renting out the house. Practise building accurate subject–verb–object sentences first, then add one subordinate clause at a time. Check articles, plural forms, and verb patterns during revision.
