IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

In few countries owning a home rather than renting one is very inportant for people. this might be a case because rental house is someones house where we donot have a privilage to do anything that we would do in our own house.

i think this is a positive situation. from my own experience and have seen and heard that many landlords donot give much perimissions to use basic resources fully, they put restrictions on people. as the people are paying, they must have right to use resources according their will.

owning a home may have their own space around the house where people can grow fruits and vegetables and can have the organic foods however the renting a home will not have this kind of facilities.

for the jobholders their will not be a space to keep vehicles, but their will be in their own house.

owning a home is better than paying rental fee monthly. this money may be used in saving, food, medicines, or any daily expenses.

there will be enough land to roam around if the house is in big space and can sit with nature, which can help boost menthal power, and can also relax there.

many people like to shape their home on their home, but the space of renting home or other home, people might get afraid to shape rental home. many people prefer a small home but owning a home rather than renting one. so i think the avbove will be a case that might be a reason for this situation.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You give a clear opinion that home ownership is positive and offer relevant reasons, including greater freedom to use the property, space for gardening, and avoiding monthly rent. However, the explanation of why ownership is especially important in some countries is not fully developed, and several points are asserted rather than explained—for example, the claims about vehicle space and mental wellbeing. The conclusion repeats the view but does not bring the reasons together. The response also falls one word short of the 250-word minimum; the 10 words copied from the task prompt were not counted. To strengthen the response, explain the social or financial reasons behind this preference and develop each main point with a specific example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The ideas are generally relevant and there is a basic sequence from restrictions on rented homes to the benefits of ownership. However, the response is presented as one continuous block rather than organised paragraphs, so the reader cannot easily distinguish the explanation, supporting reasons, and conclusion. Connections between points are also limited: several sentences begin with “owning a home” or “there will be,” and the final sentence introduces a summary without clearly linking it to the earlier arguments. Some referencing is unclear, as in “their will not be a space” and “the space of renting home or other home.” Use separate paragraphs for the reasons and conclusion, and connect each point with clear, accurate transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate several relevant ideas, including “landlords,” “restrictions,” “resources,” “organic foods,” and “monthly” fees. However, the range is limited and some word choices or combinations are inaccurate, which makes parts of the response difficult to interpret. For instance, “give much permissions” and “boost menthal power” do not express the intended ideas naturally, while “shape their home on their home” is unclear. Spelling errors such as “inportant,” “privilage,” and “avbove” are also noticeable. Build a more precise range for discussing housing, independence, costs, and security, and check spelling and common word combinations before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response relies mainly on simple sentence patterns, with a few attempts to combine ideas using “because,” “where,” and “which.” These attempts are not consistently controlled, and errors in sentence structure, agreement, articles, and punctuation occur throughout. For example, “owning a home may have their own space” has an unclear subject and pronoun reference, while “as the people are paying, they must have right” is missing an article and has an awkward clause structure. Several sentences begin with lowercase letters, and commas are used where clearer sentence boundaries are needed. Practise accurate simple sentences first, then add controlled complex clauses and check subject–verb agreement, articles, and punctuation.
