IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In several countries owning a house is considered more important than renting one because the judgemental society assumes that people living in a rented house are poor. This is clearly a negative development as it forces a person to own a house, despite being in a financial crisis.
The primary reason why people believe that having their own house is more important rather than living in a rented one is that a society judges them based on their financial ability. People assume that if a person is living in a rented house, they do not have enough finances to afford their own house. For example, several studies show that majority of wealthy people live in their own homes and poor people often live in a rented one. This results in the assumption that people living in a rented house are not wealthy enough to afford it.
This is clearly a negative development because many people under peer pressure ends up purchasing an expensive house, leaving them with very limited savings for their future. People who want to prove their financial status to their friends or relatives, often end up taking bad financial decisions such as buying a home out of their budget, which later leads to falling in a debt. For example, a person spends 90% of his salary to buy a house, and later he is not able to afford good education for his children. This explains why renting a house is better option if people does not have sufficient savings.
In conclusion, many people buy expensive house under the pressure of society, and it negatively impacts people as they end up falling in debt, with no sufficient funds for future.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both parts of the question: you explain that social judgement can make home ownership seem like proof of financial success, and you clearly argue that this pressure is negative. The examples about wealthy homeowners and a buyer spending most of their salary help illustrate your position. However, the explanation of why ownership matters is quite narrow, relying mainly on the assumption that renters are seen as poor; other possible reasons are not explored. Some support is also generalised, such as the reference to “several studies,” without explaining what they show. Develop the reasons more fully and make the examples more precise to strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states the position, each body paragraph develops a main point, and the conclusion restates the negative effects. Ideas generally progress logically from social judgement to financial pressure. Linking phrases such as “The primary reason,” “For example,” and “In conclusion” make the organisation easy to follow. This already shows some flexibility in organising the argument, but cohesion is occasionally repetitive or mechanical: “This is clearly a negative development” appears in both the introduction and the second body paragraph, and the conclusion largely repeats earlier claims. Use more varied transitions and make the final paragraph synthesise the argument rather than simply restate it.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary to discuss social attitudes and financial consequences, including “peer pressure,” “financial status,” “savings,” and “debt.” These choices make the main argument clear, and you attempt more specific expressions such as “financial crisis.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, however: “judgemental society” is less natural than “a judgemental society,” while “falling in a debt” and “good education” do not express the intended ideas idiomatically. Repetition of “house,” “people,” and “own” also limits flexibility. Aim for more precise housing and financial vocabulary, and check that phrases sound natural in context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses with “because,” “if,” and “despite,” and most sentences communicate the intended meaning. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with subject–verb agreement and articles. For example, “many people … ends up” should be “many people … end up,” and “if people does not have” should be “if people do not have.” There are also article and number issues in “a better option” and “an expensive house.” These errors rarely obstruct understanding, but proofreading for agreement and article use would improve accuracy. Continue using complex structures while keeping their grammar controlled.
