IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Nowadays, it is significant for the people in a few countries to possess a home rather than to rent a house because having own house provides is necessary for family freeom and security.

It is a positive and crucial situation for some people in a few countries to own a house as it allows them to live convenient life especially with families. Personal house do not require to pay the monthly or yearly rents. In addition, it is safer to live in own house. For example, one can enjoy doing all types of activities without someone's permission and he or she can fix or remove and even adjust setting of the house as choice or interest which in another case is difficult.

It can be negative situation because sometimes personal house is inexpensive and challenging to run than a rental one. Own house has a lot of expenses such a billing of electricity, water and gas etc. A rental house has no such cost as one has to pay a monthly rental dues which easier and beneficial with almost the same benefits. For instance, a personal house may cost you a great deal of money per month including all bills and gorceries.

In Conclusion, Possessing a home is significant for individuals living with families but they are relatively cost higher than the rental one which turn out to be the best situation with lower expenses with the same benefits.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You address both parts of the question: you suggest that ownership offers family security, convenience and freedom, then consider the financial disadvantages. However, the reasons people in some countries place particular importance on owning a home are only partly explained; the response focuses more on practical benefits than on why this preference is especially strong in those countries. Your positive/negative position is also unclear: you call ownership positive, but the conclusion says renting is the “best situation.” The cost comparison is under-developed and includes the unclear claim that a personal house is “inexpensive.” The response is 11 words below the required minimum, which limits the space available to explain and support your ideas. Develop the country-specific reasons and state a consistent overall view.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, separate paragraphs for advantages and disadvantages, and a conclusion. This makes the main line of discussion easy to identify. You also use basic linking expressions such as “In addition,” “For example,” and “In Conclusion” to signal relationships between ideas. However, the progression is sometimes mechanical, and the conclusion does not clearly follow the position in the body: it shifts from calling ownership positive to presenting renting as best. Some references are also unclear, such as “the rental one” and “which easier and beneficial,” so readers must infer what is being compared. Use more precise references and make the conclusion directly summarise a consistent position.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main points, including “security,” “monthly,” “expenses,” and “permission.” There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “adjust setting of the house.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are noticeably inaccurate, sometimes making the meaning difficult to follow. For example, “family freeom” appears to mean family freedom, while “a personal house is inexpensive” conflicts with the intended point about high costs. Phrases such as “rental dues,” “billing of electricity,” and “gorceries” are also imprecise or misspelled. Build a more accurate set of housing and cost expressions, and check spelling and collocations before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple sentences and longer structures, including a reason clause with “because” and a relative clause beginning “which.” This shows some effort to vary sentence forms, and the overall meaning is usually recoverable. However, errors occur frequently, particularly in articles, agreement and sentence construction. Examples include “having own house provides,” “Personal house do not require,” and “a rental house has no such cost as one has to pay,” where the relationships between clauses are not expressed accurately. The final sentence also has an unclear comparison and faulty structure. Practise building accurate basic sentences first, then extend them with one clear subordinate clause; check subject–verb agreement and articles such as “a” and “the.”
