IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In some countries it is very important for people to have thier own house rather than renting because this provide them freedom to live without any fear of leaving home in certain circumstances of that particular area.I think this is a positive situation beacuse this help the indiviuals to choose the specific kind of lifestyle they want to live acording to thier will.
There are many countries where people are living in renting places whether its a house or an apartment. This provide them different advantages as well as disadvantges in life. For example in my country, most of the people have rented houses and mostly are apartments with shared kitchen and toilets. This type of lifestyle has a lot difficulties and challenges for daily routine which can eventually lead to stressfull and unhealthy environment. Along with that the owner of that place can ask to leave the place anytime which emphasizes that owning a home is very important. There are also a lot more challenges in renting the house, for example there are some apartments or rental buildings which have a common main entrance gate and all the residents have to use it and whenever a new individual enters it causes disturbance for the others as well as make security concerns for them. So it is very essential for people to own a home instead of living in a rental place as this can help them in adopting a more safe, reliable and better lifestyle of thier choice where they can live.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both parts of the question: you explain why home ownership may matter and state clearly that you see it as positive. Your examples about shared facilities, possible eviction, and security concerns are relevant and help show why renting can feel less stable. The opening also links ownership with freedom and choice. This meets the task well, but the explanation is weighted heavily towards problems with renting; the reasons people value ownership itself, such as long-term security or control over their home, could be developed more directly. Some claims, such as that owners can choose their lifestyle, are asserted rather than fully explained. A more balanced, specific discussion would make the response more fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall direction: it introduces your positive view, gives examples of difficulties in rented accommodation, and ends by restating the benefits of ownership. The examples are generally grouped together, so the reader can follow the main argument. However, the essay is presented as two long paragraphs, and the second contains several distinct points that would be clearer if separated and ordered. Linking phrases such as “Along with that” and “So” help, but some connections feel mechanical, while “This provide them” has an unclear reference to whether “this” means renting or the situation described. Use a separate paragraph to explain why ownership is valued, and make references and transitions more precise.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “shared kitchen,” “security concerns,” “challenges,” and “reliable lifestyle,” and the meaning is generally understandable. There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “common main entrance gate.” However, the range is limited by repeated use of broad words such as “place,” “people,” and “lifestyle,” and several collocations are unnatural: “living in renting places,” “a lot difficulties,” and “adopting a more safe lifestyle.” Spelling errors, including “thier,” “beacuse,” and “stressfull,” also reduce accuracy. Build a wider set of natural housing-related phrases and check spelling and word forms carefully; this would make your ideas more precise and fluent.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “which can eventually lead to stressfull and unhealthy environment” and a conditional structure beginning “whenever a new individual enters it.” This shows some range, and the main message remains understandable. However, errors occur in agreement, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “this provide them” needs a singular verb, while “a lot difficulties” is missing “of”; “lead to … environment” also needs an article. The opening sentence runs several ideas together without clear punctuation, and the final sentence is long and difficult to control. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement and article use, and divide long sentences so each clause is grammatically complete.
