IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
It is undeniable that accomodation is the basic need of an individual. In this regard, it is assumed that in some countries, it is important to buy own house. This essay will outline not only the reason but also the demerits of a notion in forthcoming fragments with a logical conclusion.
To commence with, there are numerous reason that why people should buy their own home rather than renting. The prime one is no montly pay burden. To explain it, in a rented appartment people need to pay the bills and cost which can be issue as they need to arrange their living cost each and every month from their salaries. secondly, buying a house can be a life long investment. To justify it, someone who buy own private property can provide stability even to their upcoming generations. For example, Parants buy their own house so they and their children do not havr to suffer from accomodation issues. Lastly, it provides security and safety. People feel safe and secure when they live in their own houses as their is not fear of any scam and fraud from the owners of any rented households.
Moving to the situation, it is a negative development where the first and foremost point is that people who need to move from one place to another for their work purpose do not need permanent household. For instance, Army families usually migrate from one sector to another so there is no profit to build a own permanent house. Interestingly, in the rented households people do not have to suffer from the full responsibility of maintaince and revovation of building. The another disadvantage is that buying a property or land will be very expensive whereas rented ones are far more cheaper.
In conclusion, although there are several beneficial reason to own private house such as no monthly pay burden, safety and security, life long investment but the drawback such as excessive debt, maintenance burden and migration issues cannot be ignored.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address both parts of the question: you give reasons for home ownership, including financial stability, inheritance and security, and then argue that prioritising ownership can be negative for mobile workers and because of costs and upkeep. However, the position is not fully consistent. The introduction promises to discuss the “demerits,” while the conclusion lists benefits and drawbacks without clearly stating whether the overall situation is positive or negative. Some points also need fuller explanation: for example, the claim that ownership means “no monthly pay burden” overlooks mortgage payments and other costs. Make your overall judgement explicit and develop the strongest reasons with more precise support.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for reasons and disadvantages, and a conclusion. Sequencing phrases such as “To commence with,” “Moving to the situation,” and “In conclusion” help signal the stages of the argument. However, some linking is mechanical, and the first body paragraph moves through several points with limited explanation between them. References such as “the situation” and “the another disadvantage” are not always natural or clear. The conclusion also repeats earlier points rather than resolving the argument. Use fewer formulaic transitions, connect each example directly to its claim, and make the relationship between the two sides clearer.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “life long investment,” “stability,” “permanent household,” and “maintenance.” These choices allow you to discuss ownership, renting and mobility, but several spelling, word-form and collocation errors reduce precision: “accomodation,” “montly,” “appartment,” “maintaince,” and “far more cheaper.” Some expressions are also awkward, such as “no montly pay burden” and “upcoming generations.” Aim for accurate, natural combinations rather than formal-sounding phrases. Proofread spelling carefully and choose vocabulary that expresses the intended financial point precisely, such as distinguishing rent from mortgage payments and ongoing ownership costs.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a conditional-style explanation beginning “when they live in their own houses” and a contrast introduced by “although.” Meaning is generally understandable, but errors in agreement, articles, verb forms and sentence construction occur across the response. Examples include “there are numerous reason,” “someone who buy,” “their is not fear,” and “build a own permanent house.” The final sentence also lacks a clear main clause after “although.” Practise checking subject–verb agreement and singular/plural forms, and make sure subordinate clauses are attached to complete sentences. More accurate control of these patterns would make your argument easier to follow.
